Léon Charles HuberFour Kittens in a Basket
About the Item
Léon Charles Huber was a French painter, known for his still lifes and animal subjects, but especially for his paintings of cats. He was born in Paris in 1858 and studied painting at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts. From 1887 onwards, he exhibited regularly at the Salon of French Artists, where he won numerous awards for his work.
Huber's paintings of cats are characterized by their realism and attention to detail. He often depicted his subjects in everyday settings, such as sleeping on a windowsill or playing with a ball of yarn. His cats are often portrayed as being intelligent, affectionate, and playful creatures.
In addition to his paintings, Huber was also a philanthropist and a mentor to young artists. He was known for his generosity and his willingness to help others. He died in Paris in 1928 at the age of 70.

His work was immensely popular and was commissioned by princely courts and hunting pavilions. He was the younger brother of Cornelis de Vos, famous portrait painter. He studied in Antwerp with Denis van Hove (in 1604), David Remeus (in 1605) and Frans Snyders (after 1611), master of baroque still life and animal compositions. The works of the latter had a particularly noticeable impact on the composition of the work of Pauvel de Vos. He worked mainly in Antwerp. In 1620 he became a free master of Antwerp and joined the guild of Saint Luke of that city.
