Alfred Arthur Brunel De Neuville
Three Kittens Playing

About the Item

Alfred Arthur Brunel de Neuville was a French painter known for his paintings of still life and animals, especially cats. He was born Alfred Arthur Brunel on December 8, 1852 in Paris to the artist Léon Brunel (1816-1896) and his wife Marie Zénaïe Champenois. Although little is known about his early education, he is believed to have received artistic tuition from his father. Brunel de Neuville exhibited his first painting at the Paris Salon in 1883, entitled "Langouste" (lobster). He began exhibiting at the Société des Artistes Français from 1889 and was later elected a member in 1907. He was known to be living at 17 Rue des Carrières in Puteaux, near Paris in 1896 and by 1908 had moved to 35, Rue de Meudon in the Boulogne-Billancourt area of Paris. Brunel de Neuville's paintings are characterized by their realism, attention to detail, and warm palette. He often depicted his subjects in everyday settings, such as a cat playing with a ball of yarn or a still life of fruit and flowers. His cats are often portrayed as being intelligent, affectionate, and playful creatures. Brunel de Neuville's work was popular during his lifetime and he exhibited at many prestigious exhibitions, including the Paris Salon, the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and the Salon des Artistes Français. He died in Sèvres, France on February 5, 1941 at the age of 88. "Three Kittens Playing" Literature: Benezit; Thieme & Becker; Schurr; Hardouin-Fuger. Inscription: signed lower right.
