Beautiful close up portrait of a gray whale named "Pearl" feeding on kelp in the dark blue ocean by Aptos, California artist Lise Lang Crowley (American, 20th century). Great textured paint in the treatment of the barnacles on the whale. Signed "Lise Crowley" lower right. Signed and dated on verso with notations "Gray Whale" and "7th Generation Project." (7th Generation Project's web site states: "Our vision is to create a sustainable ecology of community that is built upon interdependence, diversity, transformation, equity, and self-responsibility.") Oil on 3/8" plywood and presented in a black painted wood frame. Image, 24"H x 47.75"W. The artist states: “I was born and raised in western South Dakota. I found studio arts after a career in show business. After relocating to the Santa Cruz area I began studying drawing, painting, printmaking and mixed media. Santa Cruz is a wonderful place for artists. There are many great teachers and inspiration from nature all around us.” Lise is known for her work on "Xanadu" (1980) "Dancer" and "Popcorn Girl", "Shag" (1989) and "One from the Heart" (1981). Her recent works include abstracts, florals and pet portraits.

Brett Eric Osborn was born in Lima, Ohio in 1963. Both his father and his cousin are artists and influenced the young Osborn during his formative years. Brett recalls being a child during a "Friday-night-smoked-filled-room-critique" where his father and friends would meet to look at slides of contemporary artists and their work.
