MajioAnimals I: Entangled
About the Item
Majio’s decade in Japanese culture sensitized her to animistic belief that everything has a beingness which augmented her yearly retreats to New Mexico where the animal life and weather are very much animated in the minds of the population.
Acrylic paint on small canvas depicts the individual presence of animals, strongly influenced by the enchanted land of New Mexico. Animal iconography is woven deeply throughout three diverse cultures-native, Anglo and Spanish. Majio has for many decades made yearly painting trips and extended retreats to the triangle between Sante Fe, Taos and Abiquiu. Her animal depictions not only reflect stories but are also enhanced by how people there embody the land and wildlife. Her intimate connection to the cultural traditions of the Pueblo Indians, descents from 15th century Spanish and Anglos who offer a rich diversity, if not an uneasy community relationship. The sensitivity to animal and their stories is contagious, even to the many visitors.
Coyote is watching the theater of the sky, a constant interest to those in Taos, which take him away from concern of his entanglement.
Majio has training in the United State, several years in Europe with a Master’s degree from the Buddhist University of Naropa in Creation Spirituality. Her most influential training however was in Japan over a twelve year period. Her initial trip to Japan was to study Buddhist Art, but it quickly narrowed to the traditional arts of Zen and masters if that orientation in other cultural arts. It was not so much what was learned in a papermaking village, kimono dyeing studio or the making, filling and firing woodburning kilns but how to learn or, better said, how to practice. There are many words in Japanese for practice, the one here is the polishing of being. In painting, Majio has always flowed back and forth between figurative and abstract expression. The aesthetics and Cultural Arts--- like calligraphy and tea ceremony---- garnered during her apprenticeships in Japan, along with Zen practices and concepts weave many textures into her work. Majio’s pieces are created with the overarching concept that art is not a polarity between object and subject but rather, complementary, where each part works to define each other. Working from a collaborative process-with materials, with subject and with times, Majio releases herself as sole agent, even when hers are the only hands that touch the piece. This carries out to the viewer, opening a sense of participation, evoking involvement and discussion. Inviting a realization of recognizing and choosing to acknowledge a reality beyond what we have inherited provides a platform for evoking possibilities, innate joy and new vision.

Tom Judd Biography
This is a lovely mixed media painting by popular Philadelphia based artist, Tom Judd. Provenance: Estate of Patrick Eddington. Patrick Eddington was a Utah school teacher who had the improbable idea of writing to his favorite artists and asking them to draw or paint pictures of cats. “This project is a labor of love," Eddington wrote of his endeavor in a 2004 letter. “It will culminate as a large book and traveling exhibition. It will also help Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. I’ve asked individuals I admire to create cat-related works. They are not the typical cat images but creative works.” Patrick Eddington passed away in early 2016 and his vision was, unfortunately, never realized. Nonetheless, artists like Keith Haring, Joel Peter Witkin...

Urban Coyote - Highly Detailed Photorealist Painting of Coyote in Urban Setting

ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Creating is an addiction. With all the highs and lows you would expect.
I am interested in the surface textures and creating paintings that portray them in realistic detail. Hopefully a viewer will feel they can run a hand over the feathers and moss, or grasp an object in the painting.
This detail is usually composed in an abstract design. The design can occur naturally or be arranged by me.
The subjects of my paintings are usually based on the patterns and textures of nature and human interaction with nature. I have found subjects to paint in remote wilderness areas of the world, local parking lots, and my own backyard.
