Marina Dieul
"Maison d'Emmental" - Oil Painting

2023

About the Item

This whimsical oil painting by Marina Dieul, titled "Maison d'Emmental," created in 2023, features an endearing portrait of a mouse peering out from a hole within a block of emmental cheese. The artwork is rendered on a panel measuring 6 x 6 x 1 inches and comes in a ready-to-hang frame, which brings the total dimensions to 9 x 9 inches. The painting showcases a playful and charming subject, with the mouse positioned in the center, its head and front paws emerging from a round, red-rimmed hole, which mimics the iconic large holes found in emmental cheese. Surrounding the central hole are whimsically painted emmental holes, varying in size and creating a sense of depth and texture to the cheese block. The mouse itself is depicted with a realistic attention to detail; its fur appears soft and tactile, with pink ears that are translucent when backlit by the implied light source, and its whiskers are fine and delicate. The artist has captured the creature's curious and lively essence, with eyes that gleam and seem to make a playful connection with the viewer. The rich golden hue of the cheese provides a warm, inviting background, contrasted by the bold red of the mouse hole's shutter-like covers, which are swung open on either side. The play of shadows and light on the cheese adds to the three-dimensional illusion of the holes. About the artist: Marina Dieul was born in France. She showed great interest in painting and drawing from an early age, and her family encouraged her vocation. In early 2000, she moved to Canada, where she now lives with her family. Her work has received numerous awards and honors, including the Kingston Prize, the Portrait Society of Canada, the Artist Magazine, and International Artist Magazine, among others. She won the William Bouguereau Best of Show Award, and first place in the drawing category at the Art Renewal Center Salon, the Best of Show in the "Inspiring Figures" exhibition (Butler Institute of American Art) and two Awards of Exceptional merit at the Portrait Society of America’s international competitions. She has been selected as a Living Master by the Art Renewal Center. Marina Dieul is known for her animals and figures paintings in trompe-l'oeil style, full of humor and poetry. She works in her Montreal studio surrounded by the many cats she fosters for a no-kill shelter in Montreal. Past and current memberships include the Portrait Society of Canada, the Portrait Society of America, Cecilia Beaux Forum ( PSoA), the International Guild of Realism and Mondial Art Academia.

  • "Penguins" Oil Painting
    By Derek Penix
    Located in Denver, CO
Derek Penix's (US based) "Penguins" is an oil painting that depicts a huddle of penguins flocking gently together at water's edge. Bio/Artist Statement: Derek Penix was born on December 29, 1980 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Growing up Penix was surrounded by artists in his family as his mother and grandfather painted. Penix did not pursue painting until after graduating high school. Penix’s mother encouraged him to pursue his talent and took his paintings down to a local gallery where he sold his first piece. Through the years Penix has been inspired by old masters such as Nicolai Fechin, Sargent and the French Impressionists, but it has been over the last few years that Penix has been the most influenced by artist Quang Ho. Penix had the opportunity to take a workshop under Mr. Ho and later to study briefly with him. Since then, Penix believes his paintings have grown more in the last two years than in his last ten years of painting. As an artist Penix gains inspiration from his environment whether that be at the park, in his home, or traveling abroad. He enjoys the freedom to paint different subject matter and has learned to push himself to try new things, even if they are out of his comfort zone. Penix was recognized in South West Art...
