Barnum and part Walt Whitman—and just as quintessentially American." - Peter Baldaia, Director of Curatorial Affairs, Huntsville Museum of Art, Alabama When Mark Messersmith moved to northern Florida in 1985, he was struck by a Panhandle wilderness that was foreign to his childhood experience of lawns and squirrels in St. Louis. In his lushly-colored paintings, Messersmith creates dense narratives packed with animals, plants, and insects that express his concern for the shrinking world they inhabit. Still, even now, Messersmith reflects, "powerful birds, vigilant panthers, wary gators, blackwater swamps, old cypress trees, still manage to exist in Florida and in my paintings, along with back road citrus stands and careening logging trucks. Paintings of a time and a place, midway between hope and despair." While his large works are created in the studio, without the aid of preparatory drawings, they are inspired by visits to the wetlands south of Tallahassee where he paints plein air landscapes. The large canvases are embellished with carved pediments at the top and predella dioramas along the bottom, additions that expand on the narrative as in medieval manuscripts and altarpieces. Messersmith earned a BFA in painting at Fontbonne College in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1977, and an MFA in painting from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, in 1980. He is a Professor of Art at Florida State University in Tallahassee where he has taught since 1985. In 2006, he was awarded the Joan Mitchell Foundation Award in Painting. Selected solo exhibitions include The MAC in Dallas, Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont, and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans. He is represented in the collections of the Tyler Museum of Art, Tyler, Texas; Appleton Museum of Art, Ocala, Florida; Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art, Jacksonville, Florida; and the Huntsville Museum of Art, Huntsville, Alabama.

Born in Tennessee, Lindy Chambers, an identical twin, spent her youth drawing and riding horses with her twin sister LeeLee Brazeal before moving to Texas in 1972.
