Grazing Horse
Located in Como, IT
Ruggero Panerai (Firenze 1862-1923) Grazing horse Oil on canvas in gilded frame Canvas size 100x70 cm (116x86 cm with frame) Signed at the bottom left Last quarter 19th century Ruggero Panerai was born in Florence on 13 March 1862. He was employed as a carpenter until the age of fifteen and then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, which he attended from 1877 to 1881. His teacher was Giovanni Fattori, who introduced him to the naturalistic painting of landscapes of the Tuscan Maremma and considered him among his most deserving students. Factors' teachings were decisive in orienting the young artist, who adopted the themes and the pictorial technique, updating them with the naturalism flowered in Tuscany through the example of Luigi and Francesco Gioli, Tommasi and Egisto Ferroni. In 1883 he exhibited at the Promotrice in Florence, his impressionism was inspired by the works of Guido Carocci. His painting is also affected by the bourgeois and worldly look of Giuseppe De Nittis and the manner of Vittorio Matteo Corcos who for some years lived in Paris but who returned to Livorno from time to time. Useful for a contact with the Parisian culture could also have been, for Panerai, the proximity with Francesco and Luigi Gioli, who in 1878 went to the French capital, where they had frequented Federico Zandomeneghi. Panerai was also attracted by the military theme. Military subjects are in fact among the most practiced and loved by the artist, who declines them in numerous variations, mostly devoid of pathos, but adhering to a quiet image. In 1887 his painting "Il Guado", presented in Venice, was chosen for the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome, but instead entered the "Pisani" Gallery. In the same year he exhibited in Genoa, Florence and Milan, where he won the Fumagalli Prize with "Il cavallo malato" (Florence, Galleria d'arte moderna of Palazzo Pitti), a painting in which his qualities as a sensitive animalist painter stand...

19th Century landscape oil painting of sheep in a Sussex lane
By William Luker Sr.
Located in Moreton-In-Marsh, Gloucestershire
William Luker Snr British, (1828-1905) Sheep in a Sussex Lane with Pevensey Bay in the distance Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1875 Image size: 17.25 inches x 25.25 inches Size including frame: 23.25 inches x 31.25 inches A tranquil landscape scene of a shepherd and his flock resting in a lane near Pevensey Bay, Sussex by William Luker. The ruins of Pevensey Castle can be seen in the distance with the sea beyond. William Luker Snr was born in 1828 at Faringdon, Berkshire to William and Jane Luker (née Charlwood). His father was a plumber and glazier by trade and the family lived at London Street in Faringdon. Little is known about his early education and it is believed for the most part he was self -taught. However, given the quality of his work and the fact that his family were able to keep a servant, he may well have received some artistic tuition. By the early 1850’s, he had begun earning a living as an artist by advertising in local directories, earning commissions from local landowners. He made his debut at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1851 and was a prolific exhibitor there for over 40 years. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1852 and also exhibited at the British Institution. He married the artist Ada Augusta Margetts (1839-1930) on 27 October 1864. Their eldest son William Luker Jnr (1867-1951) also became a well-known artist. The couple soon moved to London where they lived at 22 Gloucester Terrace, Campden Hill from where they both exhibited. From 1867, they lived at 15 Sheffield Terrace in Kensington until 1874 when they moved for the final time to 22 Notting Hill Square, later renamed Campden Hill Square in 1893. He died at Campden Hill-square on 28 February, 1905. Luker specialised in landscapes featuring animals such as sheep and cattle, horses and deer. He travelled around visiting areas such as Sussex, Buckinghamshire, Kent, Wales and the Highlands. However, he also made trips to Egypt and Libya producing a series of Oriental scenes in the early 1860’s. His works show a great attention to detail and his use of a lighter palette gives his subjects a luminous quality that instantly attracts the viewer. Examples of his paintings are held by the Atkinson Art Gallery, National Library of Wales, Newstead Abbey...

Hans was the son of a pastor, orphaned at a young age and raised by his grandfather. Hans Volcker was a painter of landscapes, seascapes, still lives and portraits. He also painted in watercolour and fresco techniques. In 1885, Volcker was a student of famed Norwegian realist painter Hans Fredrik Gude (1825 – 1903) at the Berlin Academy. His teacher encouraged him to travel to Scandinavia. During his study trips, he made landscape paintings of Scandinavian mountain and lakes, that brought him later great recognition. In 1891, he led his own plein air painting school. The most famous pupils were german sculptor and painter Margarethe Haeffner (1884 – 1977) and the painter Oskar Moll (1875 – 1947). With his Berlin friend painter Walter Leistikow (1865 – 1908), who was also a pupil of Gude, he shared an admiration for Max Liebermann (1847 – 1935). His acquaintance with Liebermann’s paintings furthered his stylistic development to an Impressionism. In 1894 he lived in Munich and moved to Wiesbaden in 1899, where he was active as a contemporary artist and as a member of the Art Societies, presenting Max Liebermann, Fritz Overbeck or Lovis Corinth, among others. Today, particular importance is attached to the “Dutch Secession” exhibition, featuring paintings by Vincent van Gogh and Jan Toorop. In 1912, the society showed paintings by Alexei Jawlensky...
