MADELINE CHRISTINE CLAVIER (1913-2015) Signature: Signed lower right & titled verso Medium: Oil on canvas Provenance: The collection of the artist's family Marie Christine Clavier was born in Saigon, Vietnam in 1913 to French parents and lived there for her formative years. She returned to France as a teenager and began to study painting. Her work quickly developed into whimsical paintings of poetry and songs – harmonized in a unique and distinct painting technique. Her work has an impasto feel and a folk art, outsider artist sensibility to it. Similar in style to Maik and other fantasy realists who use animals, flowers and foliage in their artworks. Marie Clavier painted ro herself rather than for profit as she was quite independently wealthy. She exhibited extensively in the United States in the 1970s especially across Connecticut and New York, showing at various galleries and cultural centres. She had numerous solo exhibitions in the 1970’s- notably at the Maison Francaise in New York and New York University. She showed at Galerie Bernheim Jeune in Paris. She won many awards for her work including Gold Medals and Palme D’Or medals. In 1988 the prestigious art publisher Leopard D’Or produced catalogue book on her life and work – by this point she had virtually given up painting. She died in 2015 aged 102. Bernheim-Jeune gallery is one of the oldest art galleries in Paris. Opened on Rue Laffitte in 1863 by Alexandre Bernheim (1839-1915), friend of Delacroix, Corot and Courbet, it changed location a few times before settling on Avenue Matignon. The gallery promoted realists, Barbizon school paintings and, in 1874, the first impressionist and later post-impressionist painters. It closed in 2019. In 1901, Alexandre Bernheim, with his sons, Josse (1870-1941), and Gaston (1870-1953), organized the first important exhibition of Vincent van Gogh paintings in Paris with the help of art critic Julien Leclercq. Michele Felice Cornè, considered to be Salem, Massachusetts’ most versatile early nineteenth century artist, painted this remarkable pair of paintings about a decade after he arrived in America from Naples, Italy. Cornè worked and lived in Salem from 1800-06 when he moved to Boston. During his Boston tenure (1807-22) the artist was noted for painting portraits of Boston ships and naval battles of the War of 1812, as well as taking on major mural commissions. This charming pair of paintings, each of two children playing, were possibly intended as overdoor decorations for a Federal period house. Cornè’s most ambitious decorations were the wall murals which he painted for the Sullivan Dorr house in Providence in 1810. And this pair of paintings seems to date from about the same period. From 1822 to his death in 1845 he lived in Newport, Rhode Island. The pair of paintings of Children playing was long in the famous Americana collection of Benjamin Flayderman. Flayderman was said to have set the standard for collecting in American furniture and decorative arts in the 1920s. Much of his collection was sold at a legendary sale at the American Art Association-Anderson Galleries (predecessor of Parke-Burnet and Sotheby’s, New York) in April of 1931. These paintings, however, were retained by Flayderman and descended in his family. Cornè was instrumental in transferring current Neapolitan painting techniques as well as Italian landscape themes to America. On the subject of Cornè's non-marine work, Nina Fletcher Little, the Cornè expert, stated: “Although Cornè's claim to twentieth century recognition has rested chiefly on his marine subjects, it is becoming increasingly apparent that he was equally successful in the charming landscapes he placed upon overmantles, fireboards, and framed canvases. Many depict the rolling countryside of his native Italy, which he copied from romantic engravings. These compositions, featuring grazing cows and frolicking peasants, are extremely colorful and picturesque. Arched bridges, steepled churches, crenellated castles, and round stone towers form most decorative backgrounds.” The two paintings: Two Children at Play with a White Bird and Two Children Playing recall earlier European and Italian models. Cherub paintings were popular throughout western Europe in the last quarter of the 18th century. But these Cornè paintings also recall the Renaissance paintings of putti such as the little angels by Raphael, painted as part of his Sistine Madonna, and lately enjoying greatly renewed popularity and notice. Cornè often used Italian old master models as a basis for landscape or figure paintings. Cornè was born on the island of Elba in 1752. During the Napoleonic Wars, he sought refuge and sailed to America on the ship Mount Vernon commanded by Elias Hasket Derby, Jr., at whose father's house Cornè resided in Salem. The artist arrived in Salem, Massachusetts in July of 1800. Derby, impressed by the Neapolitan marine paintings that he had seen and collected during his Mediterranean voyages of the late eighteenth century, sought to make the same skills available in Salem by encouraging Cornè to live and work in that town. Cornè was quite successful in transferring the current Neapolitan decorative painting to America, and his popularity grew rapidly. Cornè attracted the patronage of many in Salem, and was introduced to Samuel McIntire with whom he worked on many of Salem's houses. Between 1807 and 1809 he was at 27 Hanover Street in Boston, but by 1810 the city directories list him at 61 Middle Street. By 1822, he was settled in Newport, Rhode Island and received enough patronage to support him the rest of his life. Cornè is well represented in public and private collections including the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts, the Peabody-Essex Museum of Salem, Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, New Haven Colony Historical Society, the New York Historical Society, Newport Historical Society, Redwood Library and Athenaeum, Rhode Island Historical Society, the Smithsonian Institution, the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, the United States Department of State, the United States Naval Academy...

Chat has been working on the streets since he was 15. His anonymity was broken in 2007 when he was caught painting his famous symbol – the cat. The man behind the mask was revealed to be Thoma Vuille, but he didn’t allow himself to be disturbed by this. Instead, he continued to exacerbate the already crystallized curiosity around the urban graphics of his increasingly present symbol. The shadow of his anonymous existence dispersed upon being shined on, but in the end, he realized that he and his alter ego are one and the same person, so he learned to drop the mask and raise his name alongside the signature of his alter ego. Believing in the idea and repeating it continuously over time, the artist got to the point where he was able to shape those around him in a way that, ultimately, the image he projects outwards is reflected back at him at times when he starts to entertain his own doubts about it. Throughout the World Born in Boudry, in the canton of Neuchâtel, Switzerland, Chat began roaming the streets around 1987. He studied at the Institute of visual Arts of Orléans, graduating in 2001. In 1997, during one of the workshops, the grinning cat was born. In his, now omnipresent symbol, the culture of the neighborhood meets the never-ending optimism of the artist, making a combination that is easily recognizable and widely famous. His dream of uniting human beings, different as they might be, is now possible. That single unifying subject has been found, and he’s ever since on a mission of spreading that subject throughout the world. It was this kind of contagious optimism that nudged the film-maker Chris Marker into approaching the artist, and eventually making a documentary about him in 2004. Reflecting on France’s state after the 9/11, Marker used the phenomenon of the Chat’s cat to explore the sad feelings of the people, but to share some optimism as well. The attention was not focused on the artist, for once, as we do not need to know his personal history to be able to feel something upon seeing his work. In fact, the state of mind, or an attitude, or a philosophical aspiration, is represented through an image. Behind that image lies all the simplicity of a smile painted on a wall, and all the power that comes with it. Vuille keeps the drawing simple and the line clear. On the first sight, the cat looks like a logo. However, it can’t be reduced to a logo, as it’s so much more than that. Belonging to street art, it’s a character with a strong identity and many variations. A character that achieves a symbolic dimension through its simplicity. A Dispute with RATP – Let Art Be Free Street art is highly unpredictable – where one sees inspirational pieces, others see the destruction of property. The artist had been previously arrested on brush in hand by the Police Municipal of Orléans in 2007. The Régie autonome des transports Parisian demanded 1,800 euros in damages, stating that Vuille had, without prior authorization, drawn inscriptions, signs or drawings, in the case of Cat Heads on the walls of the Châtelet-Les Halles station during its renovation in May 2014. Due to some contradictories, Vuille’s lawyer raised the invalidity of the notice of the artist, stating that he and his client were not completely sure what they were accused of. The court found the nullity of the summons, and the RATP finally asked one euro in damages, an amount incomparable to their previous requests. The whole thing turned out to be nothing more than a bad memory for Monsieur Chat, stating that he was not a criminal, but an artist. He also explained that his intention was to humanize a transit corridor, which was gray. All he did was putting some color on it, sharing happy feelings with all who passed nearby. Nugzar's color preferences The color of Nugzar’s paintings is deep and multi-layered. It is woven of infinite number of hues and filled with light. At first sight it may be difficult to recognize the shapes in the play of flickering color dabs. The figures appear gradually, they draw the first breath just before our eyes, crystallizing from the color heap. The painter is attracted by major tonality and motives that years ago could be called “the gallant feasts” - repasts, assiduities, music parties, and airings. After somewhat daemonic, infernal imagery of early paintings, it has appeared the theme of “Le joie de vivre,” the joy of life. Source of inspiration Born in the ancient Kolkhida, he keeps the blissful pagan feel of entirety and completeness of being. It is embodied almost literally in his favorite personage auroral gorgeous-bodied beauty of a girl. He grants these forms even to Olympian inhabitants - Aphrodite, Athene, Arthemide, let alone the Bacchants. I remember unwittingly that Niko Pirosmani similarly painted on his impoverished buckrams the luxurious prince repasts and languid, elephantine beauties. Working style But his style is not bounded by grotesque parody, as well as the irony is not the only aspect of his world outlook. In his landscapes we can catch the ecstatic admiration with Nature. In contradistinction to his favorite impressionists, he never paints from nature and never bears in mind the particular place. It is just a blooming Earth, studied very closely, so that the trees are cut by the edges of the painting, and at the same time it is a bird’s eye view revealing infinite, boundless spaces. Nougzar says that the landscape for him is first of all a color ensemble. He can just leaf through the illustrated journal, nourishing his eye with color in various combinations, and so get the impulse to create a ‘physical’ landscape image. Probably, his landscapes are no less fantastical than his figure compositions, but such is his talent, his mission - to make the world more beautiful and gentle than it is in reality. Don Pollack BIOGRAPHY Don Pollack is a Painter and Adjunct Associate Professor of Visual Communication at theSchool of t he Art Institute of Chicago. His work investigates among other things, the relationship between personal mythologies and representation in painting and how it may simultaneously give reference to a narrative.Working in cross disciplines has influenced his perspectives as projects begin with an epic adventure. Conceptually proceeding from the premise that all vision is historic and constructed, Pollack’s research starts with the planning of a long distance trek,– such as a 3000 mile journey via bicycle following Lewis and Clark. His work has utilized maps, documents, photography, painting, and installation.This work was routed in a previous investigation into the role of museums in the process of forming collective memory. Don studied design at the University of Illinois and painting at the Ohio State University where he received his MFA.The state of Illinois has recognized his history based work with a special bicentennial edition of the ‘Order of Abraham Lincoln’ award. He has exhibited nationally and internationally and has shown many solo shows in, Chicago, NewYork, Atlanta, and Canada. True Life Novelettes is the most recent addition to the bigger project; Crossing The Great Divide which is loosely a series of landscape and history projects I began in 2009. It explores among other things, current events and personal literary interests through the construction of large scale [48x72”] book cover paintings. I use a variety of images juxtaposed with bylines and misplaced authors in order to create new meanings. I read the print edition of the New York Times for current content and subject matter, and because I still like the feel of a large document and printed typography. Recently and with a twist of prescient irony, a found myself reading a special supplemental section of the Times declaring that “the post-text future is here!” Could that be good for painting, now that we are entering an online culture ruled by pictures! But if our information will become dominated by pictures, slogans, and emotional announcements, I do fear that the arguments driving political discourse will soon become completely supplicated by popular memes. What should the new best sellers look like? Do I have enough time to read them? Underneath all this fanfare is it possible that the discussion will also be reduced to the display of personal artifacts of material culture? In the fashion section of today’s Times the headline reads, “Can you wear Dior to the Protest March?” (Enter my books.) I first start by writing columns and mixing up the authors with made-up titles (from films and books) and looking for strange connections to create a metaphorical tension. I then look for popular images and taglines in the news, print media, and the publishing business, and search for catchy phrases from film dialog. Then I combine everything into a new design layout to form a hybrid of ‘true life novelettes’ and modern classics. Climate change denial and alt/fake news declarations become great sources for topics in the overwhelming modern noise machine too grim to bear. I cancel my cable subscription. But what are the conditions for making a painting in a world saturated with images? While the representational, abstract, and technical concerns of painting collapse into the same memory well, what are we to say especially when we have “seen all the films and seen all the pictures”? The works of Tursic and Mille have pointed me into this new direction. In order to visually reclaim myself from disappearing into the ruins, I adopt a strategy combining editorial cartooning, oil painting and graphic design. I am attracted to those handsome publisher’s design formats, especially the ones that utilize carefully-placed typography and eclectic images– such as Everyman’s Library, Penguin Books, and Barnes and Noble. There are colored stripes running along the sides of the covers identifying the modern story collections, with the authors’ names set in script fonts. These various formats also hold the space to paint a combination of historic events and contemporary imagery from popular culture. I also patrol the web and search for vintage advertising campaigns for copy. Perhaps this grimness can have an uplifting thread. However, Virginie Vuillaume in Another Girl warns, “desire leads to disaster, partly bound up with fiction but also with death and catastrophe. The fate of those who are in love with images is always tragic, desire always leads to disaster.” So now Tursic and Mille’s painting that appropriated an image of a house on fire from a scene from Andrei Tarkovski’s film The Sacrifice also becomes my subject matter for the cover of the Year of Living Dangerously. For 2017, The Year of the Eclipse, the cover takes direction from a modern classic rendition of Frankenstein, with his head screwed on backwards. Maybe the only way left to paint now is by moving things forward by the only way possible,– through other mediums. The byline lyric for Eclipse is now taken from the Youngbloods popular song of 1967, Get Together,–so come on Frankenstein, ‘Smile on Your Brother’. Don Pollack EDUCATION m.f.a.
