Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare.
Maud Earl (1864–1943) was one of the finest animal painters of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, celebrated for her lifelike and affectionate portrayals of dogs. Born in London into an artistic family—her father, George Earl, and her uncle, Thomas Earl, were both accomplished painters of animals—Maud was immersed in the world of art and natural observation from a young age. Encouraged and trained by her father, she developed a remarkable sensitivity to the form, expression, and personality of animals, which would become the hallmark of her career.
Earl began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1884, quickly establishing herself as a specialist in canine portraiture. Her keen eye for detail and her ability to capture not only the physical traits but also the individual character of each animal made her a sought-after artist among dog breeders and enthusiasts. She painted many champion show dogs of the period, her works frequently commissioned by wealthy patrons, including members of the British royal family. Queen Victoria herself is believed to have admired Earl’s work, and later, King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra commissioned her to paint their beloved dogs.
Her paintings were not only technically accomplished but also deeply expressive. Each dog was portrayed with a blend of realism and affection, revealing Earl’s profound understanding of her subjects. Among her best-known works is the Terrier Group, a large-scale study of various breeds created for The Sportsman’s Year, and her contributions to The Book of the Dog, a lavishly illustrated volume that remains a collector’s item today.
In 1915, Maud Earl emigrated to the United States, settling in New York, where she continued her career and found new patrons among American collectors. Though the styles of art around her were changing—moving toward modernism and abstraction—Earl remained true to her own artistic vision. Her later works retained the same clarity, warmth, and deep respect for animals that had defined her earlier success in Britain.
Maud Earl passed away in 1943, leaving behind a rich legacy of paintings that continue to charm viewers with their elegance and sensitivity. Today, her work is held in high regard by art historians, collectors, and dog lovers alike, admired not only for its technical brilliance but also for its rare ability to capture the soul of her animal subjects.

Maud Earl
Known primarily for her paintings of dogs and other animals in Art Nouveau style, Maud Earl was English and came to the United States in 1916, settling in New York City. Earl studied painting with her father, George Earl, one of Britain's finest sporting and dog artists. George Earl stressed the importance of anatomy to his daughter, a knowledge that she credits to her success with painting dogs. Maud Earl became a court painter for Buckingham Palace. She did dog portraits for Queen Victoria, King Edward and many other royals. Earl also contributed illustrations for The Pointer and his Predecessors (1902) and Spaniels, Their Breaking for Sport and Filed Trials (1915).
