Neil Cawthorne The Racehorse Red Rum with Jockey-up, training on a Beach Oil on canvas Signed and dated '78 Canvas Size - 17.5 x 24 inches In 1979 Neil became one of the founding fathers of the Society of Equestrian Artists (SEA), the equivalent to the Royal Academy in terms of equestrian art. Over the years he has won many prizes for his work including the President’s Medal at the annual exhibition of the SEA at Christie’s. For many years, Neil was commissioned annually by Seagram’s distillers during their sponsorship of The Grand National and subsequently Martell’s inaugural sponsorship to paint the winning horse to be presented to the winning connections. While much of Neil’s work has been taken up with commissions, he still finds the inspiration of the racecourse, training grounds and hunting field as strong as ever, trying to convey the movement, atmosphere and excitement of the occasion in all his paintings. In 1971 Neil was commissioned by the sporting Life to paint Mill Reef and Brigadier Gerard, two of the greatest racehorses of all time. Solo exhibitions in the US and London swiftly followed. Neil’s paintings can be found in the private collections of racing’s ‘great and good’ including HRH the Prince of Wales, Paul Mellon, Lord Vestey, the Duke of Beaufort and Lord Harrington. Red Rum (3 May 1965 – 18 October 1995) was a champion Thoroughbred steeplechaser. He achieved an unmatched historic treble when he won the Grand National in 1973, 1974 and 1977, and also came second in the two intervening years, 1975 and 1976. The Grand National is a notoriously difficult race that has been described as "the ultimate test of a horse’s courage". He was also renowned for his jumping ability, having not fallen in 100 races. The 1973 race in which Red Rum secured his comeback victory from 30 lengths behind is often considered one of the greatest Grand Nationals in history. In a 2002 UK poll, Red Rum's historic third triumph in the Grand National was voted the 24th greatest sporting moment of all time.
