Nicolaes Pietersz. Berchem the Younger (Haarlem 1649 –1672 Paris) Hera and Io Oil on panel, 24,5 x 31,5 cm Signed „NBerghem“ The goddess Hera delivers Io (metamorphosed into a cow) to Argus. Io is shown as a beautiful white cow among a herd. According to Greek mythology, Io was a nymph who was seduced by Zeus, who transformed her into a cow to escape detection. His wife Hera sent Argus, with 100 eyes to watch her, but Hermes was sent to distract the guardian and slay him. Io was set free to roam the world, stung by a maddening gadfly sent by Hera, and wandered to Egypt, thus placing her descendant Belus there. Nicolaes Pietersz. Berchem the Younger was the son of the painter Nicolaes Pietersz. Berchem. He died at the young age of twenty-two. Not much is known about his life and his career. Thanks to Mareike de Kinkelder we have a better understanding of his work and activities. Nicolaes Berchem the Younger was baptized on 22nd march 1649 in Haarlem; the exact date of his birth is not known. He grew up in an artistically inclined milieu. He was educated by his father Niolaes Berchem though both his grandfathers (both artists), Pieter Claesz. (1597-1660) and Jan Wils (1603-1666) may also have contributed to his artistic education. Together with his family Nicolaes the Younger moved to Amsterdam in 1659. There he worked as an assistant for his father. About Around 1670 he set out to an artist’s journey, his destination very likely being Italy. In Paris, one of his first residences, he stayed about one year before he died in 1672. Today it is virtually unknown that the prominent painter Nicolaes Berchem had a son who was as also an artist. Therefore it is hardly surprising that only a few paintings have been attributed to him. De Kinkelder is of the opinion that Nicolaes often copied paintings by his father and that his father’s influence is clearly identifiable in his works. So far just the Southern landscape with herders is known to bear the signature “d’Jonge Berchem”, but Nicolaes seems to have imitated his father’s signature as well. The present painting is another version of a picture by Nicolaes Berchem the Elder, today in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. It is dated c. 1670. Nicolaes Berchem the Elder painted the subject Hera and Io at least twice: around 1646 (a now presumably lost painting) which was with the art dealer Cramer in The Hague in 1958) and around 1670 (the Rijksmuseum painting). Dr. Pieter Biesboer attributed the present painting to Nicolaes Berchem the Younger. He assumes that it was created in the workshop of Berchem the Elder, shortly before his son’s departure in 1669/70. Dr. Biesboer thinks that the signature „NBerghem“ was made by Nicolaes Berchem the Younger. Summing up, this means that both, the Rijksmuseum painting as well as the present picture, were created in the workshop of Berchem in Amsterdam. This fits with the thesis that Berchem copied and varied woks by his father. Comparing the two works, one can recognize only minor differences, e.g. the rendering of the face of Hera and the lighter and less dramatic colouring. Both works were executed on panel and nearly have the same measurements. The quality of the present painting is astonishing. One notices the fluid brushstrokes, the dynamic composition as well as the golden-brown and green tonality. This painting is one of the few known works by Nicolaes Berchem the Younger.
