About the Item

20 x 24 (canvas size) 25.5 x 29.5 (w/ frame) Signed and Dated Lower Left Paul Harney (1850-1915) Born in New Orleans on October 21, 1850, he was a landscape, portrait and still-life painter. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City, and the Royal Academy in Munich. Among his teachers were Albon Jasper Conant, a portraitist of Abraham Lincoln. Harney settled in Alton, Illinois, across the river from Saint Louis. He taught art classes and served as a professor at Shurtleff College. After twenty years as both faculty and as Shurtleff's Director of Art, he moved to the Missouri side of the river along with his wife Emma Stewart and his three children (his son Eliot had died while still in Alton). He was very active in the Saint Louis artist community, occupying a chair in the Saint Louis School of Fine Art (later called Washington University's Fine Arts Department). He was a founding member of the Saint Louis Artist Guild and a member of the Society of Western Artists. Paul E. Harney died of tuberculosis on November 27, 1915 at age 65.

Of him it was written: "In the late nineteenth century no American artist was more thoroughly identified with the painting of cows than William Henry Howe." (Richter 128). In a style that combined Tonalism and Realism, he was a painter of light-filled pastoral landscapes that sometimes had sheep as well as cattle tended by their shepherds and herders. He began a career as a businessman in St. Louis, and in his mid-thirties, changed course and went to Dusseldorf Germany to study art at the Royal Academy. In 1881, he went to Paris and studied with animal painters Felix Vuillefroy and Otto de Thoren. He also exhibited his work at the Paris Salons and the Paris Universal Exposition of 1889. Travels in Holland in the 1880s with other artists inspired his interest in pastoral subjects, and during that time he began his cattle paintings...
