About the Item
American artist Paul Krapf (1927-2019) had lived in Montana for a decade when he painted this coyote standing in the snow. He worked from the home studio that he and his wife built on land along the Yellowstone River. The inhabitants of Yellowstone National Park were his frequent subjects. He also produced coastal views, especially Oregon’s, as well as Western scenes and landscapes.
Krapf was born in Western Pennsylvania and by age 10 was painting in oils. From 1946 to 1948 he attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh but subsequently embarked on a 30-year career as an electrical designer—including work at NASA—while painting in his off hours. Starting in 1980, he was painting full time and subsequently became known for both realistic and abstract work in multiple mediums.
