Golden Age Sheep and Goat in a Landscape - Dutch 17thC Old Master oil painting
Located in Hagley, England
Abraham Begeyn, Dutch Golden Age painter and Prussian court painter painted this wonderful 17th century Old Master oil painting. Painted circa 1690 and signed lower right, the subject matter is sheep and a goat under a tree in the foreground, amongst beautiful flora and fauna. Through the trees one can see some classical ruins to the left and to the right some buildings with a shepherd and his flock in front of the buildings and mountains beyond. Above is a beautiful sky tinged with pink, suggestive of dawn. There is tremendous detail in the flora and fauna and also the sheep's woolly coat. Begeyn particularly favoured painting this sort of scene with the elements of landscape, ruins or buildings and animals and was a master at it and highly prized in the Netherlands. This is an excellent example of Begeyn's work and is good condition given its age as a 17th century Old Master oil painting.
Signed lower right.
Provenance: Collection of Mr P. Vienna (label on the reverse)
Sale, Sotheby's, London, 18 October 1995, lot 70.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 24 inches by 21 inches unframed and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in a gilt swept frame, 31 inches by 28 inches framed and in good condition.
Abraham Begeyn (c. 1637 Leiden - 11 June 1697 Berlin), was a Dutch Golden Age painter. Begeyn was born in Leiden. Though perhaps known mostly for his Italianate landscapes and cattle in the manner of Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem, Begyn was a highly skilled painter active in many genres, who travelled widely. According to the RKD, Begeyn's earliest known work is from 1653, though he was first accepted into the Guild of St. Luke in Leiden in 1655. He stopped paying dues in 1667, because he set off for a trip to Italy. He is registered in Rome and Naples from 1659–1660. In the rampjaar or disaster year, of 1672, he is registered in Amsterdam, and after that he lived in London, where he painted at Ham House, Surrey, together with Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633–1707) and Dirck van Bergen...

18th Oil Painting Horses Feeding at the Stables
Located in London, GB
James Seymour (1702–1752)
Feeding Time in the Stables
Oil on canvas
32 x 38 inches inc. frame
Provenance: Private Collection, Lambourn
James Seymour (1702–1752) was an English painter, widely recognized for his equestrian art.
Seymour was born in London. His father was an amateur artist and art dealer, whose other business dealings (as a banker, goldsmith, and diamond merchant) afforded young Seymour the leisure time to study art on his own, either his father's or the art at the Virtuosi Club of St. Luke - a gentleman's club his father belonged to, specializing in art. In a short time the boy was a self-taught artist, familiar with many of the prominent artists of the period.
Seymour's love of art was matched only by his love of horses. He began spending time at racetracks early on, and before long found himself absorbed in the sport - drawing, painting, owning, breeding, and racing horses. His art proved popular among the prominent sporting families of the day, eventually garnering Seymour patrons in Sir William Jolliffe and Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset...

Shepherd with Sheep, Cows and a Goat in a Landscape by Jan Frans Soolmaker
Located in Stockholm, SE
This painting depicts a pastoral scene that is attributed to the artist Jan Frans Soolmaker, an artist known for his Italianate landscapes and scenes that often feature equestrian and Arcadian elements. The painting is not signed but is attributed to Soolmaker, relating it to a known signed work by the artist that was sold at Sotheby’s London in 1999.
The scene is suffused with the warm glow of a setting or rising sun, casting a soft light that is characteristic of Soolmaker’s landscapes. It shows a shepherd guiding a group of cattle across a shallow stream, with the animals taking center stage in the composition. The animals are rendered with careful attention to their forms and the play of light on their bodies, which is a hallmark of Soolmaker's work. The landscape is composed of a rocky terrain with trees and shrubbery, creating a sense of depth and natural beauty that invites the viewer to explore the scene further.
The background suggests a vast, open landscape with distant mountains, which adds to the Italianate feel of the painting. The sky is dramatic, with clouds catching the light of the sun, contributing to the overall serene yet dynamic atmosphere of the work.
The provenance of the painting is notable, having been in the possession of significant historical figures such as Swedish Prince Fredrik Adolf, and later The collection of Pär Ulmgren, The collection of Gösta Stenman, and Engineer and politician Gustaf Henry Hansson.
Potential buyers have the option of choosing between a newly made gold frame or an older brown frame, which allows for personalization in how the work is presented.
Soolmaker’s work is often compared to that of Dutch painter Nicolaes Berchem, whose style he emulated. Soolmaker's landscapes reflect a similar sensitivity to light and composition, making his works sought after for their beauty and historical significance. Despite the smaller body of work left by Soolmaker, due to his short career, his paintings are valued for their craftsmanship and the legacy of the artist’s brief but impactful contribution to the Dutch Italianate landscape genre.

17th-Century Provincial Flemish, Still Life With Fruit, Cat, Dog & Flowers
Located in Cheltenham, GB
This fabulous late-17th-century Flemish still life depicts a plethora of fruit, basket of flowers, cat, dog, cushion and juices.
Produced in around 1690, bounteous still lifes of this nature served a dual purpose. Firstly, they demonstrated the owner’s abundant wealth via the display of exotic imported wares and secondly, they conveyed a deeper meaning via hidden symbolic references.
There’s a remarkable selection of fruit on display here including red berries, pears, grapes, apples, peaches, a pomegranate, and a cantaloupe melon. While in the top left, several glass bottles stand within a terracotta bowl, partially filled with colourful liquid. It’s rare to find such an inclusion in still lifes from the period - perhaps they contain juices.
Adjacent to the bottles, a small pampered dog, probably a spaniel, is barking at a surprised tabby cat emerging from the shadows. Both appear to be arguing over the cantaloupe. This is likely to be an allegorical reference alluding to the perils of courtship.
The artist is unknown but it’s likely they originated from the provinces and derived influence from the painters of Antwerp, such as Clara Peeters...

Pair of 17th century oil paintings of peacocks and other birds in a landscape
By Marmaduke Cradock
Located in Bath, Somerset
Please note that the price listed (and measurement) is for both paintings together.
A pair of 17th century oil paintings of peacocks and other ornamental birds in a garden landscape. This pair of highly decorative paintings were sourced recently from a distinguished country house collection in the Cotswolds, west England, where they have spent at least the last fifty years.
Each painting displays a long vista towards the left towards a country house in the distance, which is a recognisable technique frequently used by Cradock in his compositions.
Provenance: From the collection of a titled English gentleman, Gloucestershire.
Please note - dimensions of each painting are 53 x 63cm each (listed larger dimensions are for the 2 paintings combined in order to show correct scale on images displaying paintings on example walls)
Marmaduke Cradock (Somerset 1660-London 1716) was an English painter of birds and other animals. Horace Walpole wrote that 'I have seen some pieces by his hand which he painted with a freedom and a fire that entitles them to more distinction'. According to Walpole, Cradock deliberately shunned aristocratic patronage. 'He worked in general by the day, and for dealers who retailed his works; possessing that conscious dignity of talent which made him hate to be employed by men whose birth and fortune confined his fancy, and restrained his freedom'.
His work was heavily influenced by other painters of birds such as Melchior d'Hondecoeter, Pieter Casteels and Jacob Bogdani...
