About the Item
19th century oil painting of mare and two foals with landscape by Scottish artist Robert Alexander (1840-1923) signed and dated. Alexander is known for his paintings of animals, primarily horses and dogs. This oil on board painting has rich color and contrast, with horses standing out against trees, sky and cottage in the background.
Alexander exhibited in the Royal Academy and Royal Scottish Academies, as a member of both. His work is well represented in galleries and collections.
Presented in period gilt frame the painting is in excellent condition.
The frame shows wear and one small missing piece, but this does little to detract from the overall presentation. About 20" high and 24" wide in the frame, this is a good size for most rooms.
