About the Item

Outsider artist Scott Harbison imagines a world of curious alien beings and wide-eyed mutant animals, naively navigating unknown territory. His mischievous figures are activated by surrounding areas of bold, decisively applied swatches of bright color and distinct, deliberate markings. Working with acrylic paint, oil stick, and collage, either on found wood panels, plywood, hardboard, or canvas, Harbison’s spontaneously rendered creatures invoke both primitive art and child's play. “In 2018, I became a painter. An artist. I am a product of the '70s and I spent my life in the fine state of New Jersey—the most wonderful state of them all. As a result of stuff that happened, choices, substances, fate, and probably pollution, I have formed an imagination that describes an environment I understand to be worthy of depicting ... possibly a cautionary tale ... where all life forms, including otherworldly ones, merge and coexist…sometimes peacefully, sometimes not, I am leaving behind hieroglyphics, useless to anyone unless they are interested in my version of a not-too-distant reality. I use paint.” – Scott Harbison Painting, Outsider Art, Mythical Creature, Figurative, Non-Human, Moose, Dark and Pastel Colors, Home Decor, Decor, Wall Art, Wall Decor

John Randall Nelson is an Arizona-based painter and sculptor. Nelson’s works are layered with his own personal language consisting of patterns, symbols, and archetypes that may not make any literal sense but play on subconscious associations. His paintings are thick with poured pigment, saturated washes and worked with layers of drawing and collage. While Nelson's work is akin to outsider, folk art, it should be noted that he received his MFA from Arizona State University in 1995 and has completed commissions for projects as diverse as the National Endowment for the Arts, the United States Postal Service...

Waterline Fine Art, Austin, TX is pleased to present the following work: Oil, pastel, and paper collage on canvas. Signed and dated verso. 52.75 x 47.75 in. 54 x 49 in. (framed) Gilded floater frame. Provenance Compass Rose, Chicago Born Sylvan Irwin Goldberg in 1924 and raised in the Bronx, Michael Goldberg was an important figure in American Abstract Expressionism, who began taking art classes at the Art Students League in 1938. A gifted student, Goldberg finished high school at the age of 14 and enrolled in City College. He soon found New York’s jazz scene to be a more compelling environment, and he began skipping classes in favor of the Harlem jazz clubs near campus. Goldberg’s love of jazz would become a lifelong passion and a key component to his approach to composition in his paintings. From 1940 to 1942, like many of the leading artists of the New York School, Goldberg studied with Hans Hofmann. In 1943, he put his pursuit of painting on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Serving in North Africa, Burma, and India, Goldberg received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star before being discharged in 1946. After his service, he traveled and worked in Venezuela before returning to the United States, settling back in New York and resuming studies with Hofmann and at the Art Students League. Living downtown and frequenting the Cedar Bar, Goldberg befriended many of the artists of the New York School. In 1951, his work was included in the groundbreaking Ninth Street Show, co-organized by Leo Castelli, Conrad Marca-Relli, and the Eighth Street Club, and featuring the work of - among others - Hofmann, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline. In 1953, the Tibor de Nagy...
