Portrait of an elegant lady riding a white hunter by Sir Francis Grant P.R.A. (1803-1878).
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in excellent condition, having just been professionally cleaned, restored and re-varnished. Clients should also note that tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary.
Grant was the fourth son of the Laird of Kilgraston, an estate in Perthshire, Scotland. Francis Grant trained with the eminent equine painter John Ferneley and by 1834 was exhibiting aristocratic portraits and sporting pictures, occasionally combining the two subjects as in the large work offered here. Grant’s most famous equestrian portrait, shown at the Royal Academy in 1840, featured Queen Victoria riding out with her terriers Dash and Islay together with Viscount Melbourne, the Prime Minister.
Francis Grant was knighted by Victoria in 1866 and became President of the Royal Academy the same year. Between 1834 and his death in 1878 the artist exhibited 253 paintings at the Royal Academy.
