Thomas Ivester Lloyd
Duke, a springer spaniel

About the Item

Thomas Ivester Lloyd (1873-1942) Duke, a springer spaniel signed 'T IVESTER LLOYD' (lower right) and inscribed 'DUKE.' (lower left) oil on board 7 ¾ x 9 ¼ in. (19.7 x 23.5 cm.) frame 8 ¼ x 9 ⅞ in. (20.9 x 25.1 cm.) This charming oil painting by Thomas Ivester Lloyd depicts a liver-and-white Springer Spaniel named Duke, standing alert against a warm autumnal background. Lloyd, a noted early 20th-century British sporting artist, captures the dog’s attentive posture and intelligent gaze with characteristic sensitivity. The richly textured coat and subtly modelled form reveal the artist’s familiarity with gundog breeds and his ability to convey both physical likeness and temperament. The soft, rustic tones of the setting evoke the spaniel’s natural habitat, reinforcing its role as a working companion. The painting is signed lower right, with the dog’s name inscribed at lower left.

By Aaron Bohrod

Aaron Bohrod Objets D'Arctic, 1987 Signed lower right Oil on gesso board 14 x 11 inches Aaron Bohrod's work has not been limited to one style or medium. Initially recognized as a regionalist painter of American scenes, particularly of his native Chicago, Bohrod later devoted himself to detailed still-life paintings rendered in the trompe l'oeil style. He also worked for several years in ceramics and wrote a book on pottery. Born in 1907, Bohrod began his studies at Chicago's Crane Junior College in 1925, and two years later enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago. But it was at the Art Students League in New York City, from 1930 to 1932, that he studied under the man believed to be his most significant early influence, John Sloan. Sloan's romantic realism is reflected in the many depictions of Chicago life...
