About the Item

Thomas Kennedy (1900-1982) Two salukis - Mazuri Malaki 'Dullah' and Mazuri-Mahboub-Ali 'Mali' each signed and dated 'Thomas. Kennedy. 1960' (lower right and lower left respectively) and further inscribed and dated ' MAZURI MALAKI/ "DULLAH"./ PAINTED FOR MISS ELEANOR BEKEN OF CHINGFORD/ ESSEX/ Thomas Kennedy/ 1960' and 'MAZURI- MAHBOUB-ALI/ "MALI"/ PAINTED FOR/ MISS ELEANOR BEKEN/ OF CHINGFORD/ ESSEX/ Thomas Kennedy/ 1960.' (on the reverse of each) 14 x 12 in. (35.6 x 30.5 cm.) frame 16 ¼ x 14 ¼ in. (41.3 x 36.2 cm.) a pair (2) ‘Mali’ and ‘Dullah', embody the regal grace and distinctive beauty that have long made Salukis a breed favoured by nobility and royalty, particularly in the Middle East. One of the world's most ancient dog breeds, Mali’s pale golden fur is rendered in soft, luminous strokes, while Dullah’s rich, chestnut tones depicted with depth and warmth. Their long, feathered ears and keen expressions are deftly captured, conveying both intelligence and a quiet, watchful temperament. The muted backgrounds allow the subjects to take full prominence, enhancing their striking silhouettes. The names Mazuri Malaki ‘Dullah’ and Mahboub-Ali ‘Mali’ are Arabic names that reflect the breed’s deep-rooted history in the region. Malaki means ‘angelic’ or ‘messenger’, and Dullah derives from Abdullah (عبدالله), meaning ‘servant of God’. ‘Mahboub-Ali’ means ‘beloved of Ali’ or simply ‘beloved Ali’, while Mali (مالي) can mean ‘my wealth’ or 'belonging to me’ in Arabic, a fitting tribute to a cherished companion. Mazuri means ‘beautiful’ or ‘good’ in Swahili, and may refer to the kennel name chosen by the breeder.
