19th century English portrait of a Gray Hound with huntsmen in a landscape

circa 1830

$9,500

About

Outstanding Early 19th-century portrait of a grayhound in an extensive landscape with a hunt in the distance. This piece has all the qualities of the early 19th-century sporting painters such as John Ferneley, J.F.Herring and others. The dog is painted with the finest observation of detail giving the dog character and form. Field dogs such as this portrait would have been painted for the landed Gentry of the English country classes. It would have been an expensive painting because of its quality and I'm sure would have hung in a grand country house. The painting is an oil on canvas and has been framed in a new golf leaf hand made English frame.
