Georg Stoopendaal
Christmas Sheaf With Birds by Georg Stoopendaal

Early 1900s

About the Item

This painting, created by the Swedish artist Georg Stoopendaal (1866–1953), captures a cherished Nordic tradition: a "julkärve" or Christmas sheaf. The sheaf, made of grain and hung outdoors, serves as a festive offering to birds during the cold winter months. This practice symbolizes generosity and respect for nature, inviting various bird species to gather and feast. In this delightful scene, Stoopendaal depicts several recognizable birds of the Swedish winter landscape. Among them are the European Robin (Erithacus rubecula), with its bright red breast; the Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus), adorned in blue and yellow; the larger Great Tit (Parus major), with its distinctive black cap; the House Sparrow (Passer domesticus), a common bird with brown and gray plumage; the Bullfinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhula), notable for its vibrant red belly; and the Yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella), with its yellow head and chest. Georg Stoopendaal was a self-taught artist, primarily known for his landscapes and still lifes. He was born in Jönköping, Sweden, and later settled in Hindås with his family. His works were widely published, including in the Ny illustrerad tidning and in the United States from 1893 to 1898. His art is represented in Sweden’s prestigious collections, such as the Nationalmuseum and the Gothenburg Museum of Art. A prolific illustrator, Stoopendaal also illustrated several books and spent time in America, where he documented Native American cultures. His most sought-after paintings often feature working horses, reflecting his eye for detail and deep connection to rural life. He belonged to a notable family of artists—his wife, Anna, and brother Ferdinand were also painters, and Jenny Nyström, a beloved Swedish illustrator, was married to his brother Daniel. Stoopendaal’s legacy continued through his son, Wilhelm, known as Mosse Stoopendaal, who became a renowned nature painter and was influenced by his father's work from an early age. This painting is a fine example of Stoopendaal's skill in capturing the harmony between human traditions and nature's beauty. oil on canvas signed G.Stoopendaal unframed: 60.5 x 38.5 cm (23.8 x 15.2 inches) framed: 76 x 54 cm (29.9 x 21.3 inches)

Sunset over the Swedish Bohuslän Coast
Located in Stockholm, SE
This painting by Anders Wahlgren, a Swedish painter, depicts a serene coastal landscape at sunset, likely set in the Bohuslän region of Sweden. The image is bathed in the warm, glowing hues of the setting sun, reflecting off the calm waters. A lone seagull perches on a rock in the bottom right corner, adding a subtle touch of life to the tranquil scene. Anders Nils Henrik Wahlgren, born on February 15, 1861, in Lund, Sweden, was not only a skilled artist but also a forest science researcher. His artistic journey began early in his life, studying under the guidance of academic drawing master Axel Hjalmar Lindqvist in Lund. Later, during his time at the Forest Institute, he received artistic training from Anders Kallenberg. His travels for forestry studies led him to take a significant break in 1891, where he studied art in Brittany and Paris, particularly within a circle of Swedish painters and at a Scandinavian art school led by Richard Hall...

"Mid Summer Journey on Sledge" Impressionist South African Painting
By John Koenakeefe Mohl
Located in Houston, TX
Oil painting on canvas board of a sledge pulled by oxen. The painting is done in an impressionist style. The canvas board is signed by the artist on the front and titled, signed and dated on the back. The board is not framed. Artist Biography: John Koenakeefe Mohl was born on 29 September 1903 in Dinokana, Zeerust in the North-West Province. Mohl's father was a carpenter who sculpted objects such as chairs and mealie stampers. During his youth, Mohl drew with 'pepa' on rocks and made clay objects. He attended primary school in Dinokana where his teachers reprimanded him for constantly drawing in class. Mohl's father eventually withdrew him from school to tend to the goats. Nevertheless, Reverend Hale soon recognized Mohl’s talent and convinced his father to allow him to draw. Mohl attended the Moeding Training Institute (later known as Tigerkloof Training School) where he attained a teacher’s diploma. He subsequently accompanied a German artist to South West Africa (now Namibia) where he studied painting at the Windhoek School of Art. The Missionary Society and the Lutheran Church then sent him to Dusseldorf, West Germany where he studied art at the Kunst-Akademie during the following five years. The artist later returned to South Africa and settled in Sophiatown, where he started running art classes from his home. His art school was known to his peers as the ‘White Studio’. He was one of the first Black artists to be involved in art education and training. In the late 1950s, he was prevented from operating a business; therefore he established the Apollo Art...
