by William Williams (1727-1791) sales to $60,000
Large circa 1770 portrait of a Stallion race horse in an open landscape, oil on panel by William Williams. Early and important American race horse portrait of the Stallion at side profile. William Williams was born in Bristol England before travelling to Philadelphia later marrying Mary Mare and settling in New York. The portrait dates to Williams active period in New York during the rise and popularity of thoroughbred racing that dates back to 1665. Inscribed verso with reference HW6685 and authenticated independently.
