Horses with People on the Beach Ogunquit Beach"by Walt Kuhn

1915

About the Item

Walt Kuhn (1877-1949)was associated with the art group known as "The Eight" and with Arthur B. Davies, was a the key figure in forming the American Association of painters and Sculptors that organized the Armory Show of 1913 that introduced modernist European art to America. Kuhn was executive secretary of the Association and traveled abroad to select entries for the Armory Show. Walt Kuhn was inspired and influenced by many artists, most significantly, Cezanne. And like Cezanne, he destroyed most of his canvas's keeping about a dozen a year. This of course is why his work is harder to acquire. This painting by Kuhn is of Ogunquit Beach in Maine, where he has other paintings during the same period of time. The reverse of this painting, oil on board, that has been cradled for security, reveals in small amounts some writing on the revers of the painting, most readable is the words Study, The painting is framed in a hand carved gold leaf frame. As of 2021, the auction record for a painting by Walt Kuhn is 1.6 million. His work is included in most major museums around the world including the Museum of Modern Art NY and the Metropolitan Museum of Art NY as well as some of the most prominent private collections in the world.
