William Joseph Shayer
Horse and dog in a landscape, William Joseph Shayer (1787–1879)

About the Item

This painting by William Joseph Shayer features a horse and dog in a landscape surrounded by a serene and rustic scene, showcasing Shayer's skill in portraying figures within natural settings. The composition features a horse, standing in a rolling countryside, with a dog, playfully interacting with the horse. The painting is signed and dated "September 1880". The background consists of a lush, warm, afternoon light colours landscape with trees, fields, and distant hills, creating a tranquil atmosphere. The is soft, from the late afternoon sun, casting long shadows and highlighting the textures of the grass, fur, and foliage. Shayer's attention to detail is evident in the naturalistic portrayal of the animals—especially the horse, with its muscular form and flowing mane—and the dog, with its r loyal expression. Shayer's use of light and color bring the scene to life, with earthy tones predominating in the foliage and animals. The figures of the horse and dog are harmoniously integrated into the landscape, reflecting Shayer's mastery of combining human and animal subjects with the natural environment, emphasizing the beauty of the rural world. This type of work is characteristic of Shayer’s rustic landscapes, where animals were often central to the composition, bringing a sense of vitality to the otherwise peaceful countryside. The artist was the eldest son of the landscape painter William Shayer (1787-1879), and the stepbrother of Charles Waller and Henry Thring Shayer. He is known to have worked in his father's studio and by the age of seventeen was also exhibiting at Henry Buchan's Hampshire Picture Gallery. He was later to exhibit at the Royal Academy and British Institute. By 1830 Shayer was listed in the Southampton directories as an animal portrait painter, and in 1836 he moved to London and produced several works for Rudolph Ackermann.
