About the Item

William Joseph Shayer (1811-1892) Two gentlemen on hunters with greyhounds in a landscape signed and dated 'W. Shayer./ 1836' (lower left) Oil on canvas Canvas size - 12 x 15 1/2 in Framed size - 15 1/2 x 19 in Provenance Anonymous sale; Christie's, South Kensington, 14 June 2001, lot 143, sold for £8,813; The Collection of Charlie Watts. Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare. William Joseph Shayer was a British painter best known for his evocative depictions of rural life and animals, continuing the artistic legacy of his father, William Shayer Sr., a prominent figure in 19th-century English painting. Born into a family of artists, William Joseph developed a natural talent for capturing the gentle rhythms of the countryside, often painting scenes filled with rustic charm, including village markets, woodland clearings, and farmsteads bustling with human and animal activity. Much like his father, he frequently featured horses, dogs, and livestock as central elements of his compositions, rendered with a keen eye for anatomy and movement. His work is notable for its warmth and detail, blending a romantic view of country life with realistic observation. William Joseph occasionally collaborated with his father, contributing figures or animals to larger works, but also produced a substantial body of independent paintings that were well received in his time. Though overshadowed by some of his contemporaries, Shayer’s work offers a vivid window into Victorian rural England and remains valued by collectors and art historians for its pastoral beauty and technical skill.

Late 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting in the manner of Abraham Hulk the Younger (1851-1922), this painting was acquired by Saltire Gallerie with a larger painting signed by Hulk the Younger, (just SOLD). Presented in a period decorative gilt frame, the painting is of a cottage in a woodland with cattle by a pond, a little black dog and man and a woman standing by. In the distance is a glimpse of a river and grasses, framed by trees and an overcast sky. Hulk is renowned for his treatment of the changing season from summer to autumn, and the golden leaves and fading greens in this painting suggest this changing time of year.
