Zura
Panda, 2024
Acrylic on canvas
40 x 30 in. (102 x 76 cm)
In Panda, Zura evokes empathy through the panda’s gentle, soulful expression, while its oversized head sealed in bold black and white becomes a universal icon of both vulnerability and silent resilience. The neutral background offers a minimalist stage, drawing full attention to the subject and evoking introspection. This piece continues Zura's exploration of primal instincts dressed in comfort and familiarity—an animal face on a near-abstract form that challenges the viewer to see beyond physical form and into shared emotional terrain. The panda’s rounded, cartoon-adjacent features soften the allegory, while the imposing size (40×30″) commands presence, urging contemplation on empathy, identity, and our intertwined connection with the natural world.
Acrylic’s raw, expressive potential harmonizes here with Zura’s philosophical intent, making “Panda” a striking ambassador of emotion stirred by simplicity, scale, and soulful gaze.
Central to Zura’s artistic vision is the human form, often intertwined with animal heads—a compelling exploration of the primal instincts within human nature. His work captivates with its raw emotion, symbolic depth, and refined execution. In the spring of 2022, he captivated audiences during an exhibition in Williamsburg, unveiling a striking new series of works.
Zura is a world-renowned artist celebrated for his powerful sculptures and paintings. His works grace public spaces across New York City, Atlanta, Georgia, and Connecticut, and are held in distinguished private collections, including that of American hedge fund manager Victor Niederhoffer.
Born in the Republic of Georgia, Zura spent 14 years developing his craft before formally studying at the State Academy of Fine Art. He now lives and works in Brooklyn, where his Williamsburg studio serves as both a creative sanctuary and a teaching space, where he shares his expertise through sculpting classes.
Zura remains deeply committed to his practice, guided by a philosophy rooted in beauty, love, and harmony.
