About the Item

Story illustration for “The Lively Lady” by Kenneth Roberts for The Saturday Evening Post, published March 21, 1931, page 18. The full caption reads: “We could sell that ship for forty thousand dollars!” This illustration by Anton Otto Fischer, a regular contributor to The Saturday Evening Post and Kenneth Roberts's serial novels, depicts a scene from Roberts's "The Lively Lady," part of his Chronicles of Arundel series. The story follows U.S. sea captain Richard Nason during the War of 1812, including his capture and imprisonment at Dartmoor. In the scene illustrated, an Arundel privateer has successfully captured The Rose of the West, a valuable British merchant ship laden with sugar and indigo. After offloading the indigo, Captain Nason intends to burn the vessel. However, crew member Rowlandson Drown approaches the captain with an alternative. Gesturing emphatically towards the ship, Drown suggests, "We could sell that ship for forty thousand dollars!" Captain Nason, prioritizing the safety of his crew, rejects the proposal, citing the dangers of encountering a British sloop of war that could lead to their capture. Despite Drown's persistence and the crew's clear dissatisfaction, the captain remains steadfast in his decision, believing that burning the ship is the safest course of action for everyone involved. Signed and dated 'ANTON OTTO FISCHER 1930' (lower right), titled on a presentation plaque, with a copyright label from Curtis Publishing Company (affixed to the stretcher) and inscribed (on the reverse) Inscribed on the reverse: 'An Arundel privateer captures a British merchant man. Painted for The Lively Lady/Loaned to Kennebunkport Service Club, 1943/Kenneth Roberts' and 'Boyle + Nason' (on the stretcher).

"Little Tolo" Saturday Evening Post Illustration, December 30, 1922
By Anton Otto Fischer
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Medium: Oil on Canvas Signature: Signed Lower Right The illustration depicts a clipper ship at sea. "Little Tolo," a story illustration for the Saturday Evening Post, December 30, 1922. The marine paintings by Anton Otto Fischer are as authoritative as only a working sailor could make them. Born in Munich, Germany but orphaned as a boy, Fischer ran away to sea at 16 and spent eight years before the mast on a variety of sailing ships. Paid off in New York, he stayed to apply for American citizenship and to teach seamanship on the school ship, "St. Mary's." He later served as a hand on racing yachts on Long Island Sound and worked as a model and handyman for the illustrator A.B. Frost. When he had saved enough money, he spent two years at the Academie Julian in Paris under Laurens. Returning to the United States, Fischer sold his first picture to Harper's Weekly in 1908, around the time he moves to Wilmington to receive critiques from Pyle. Everybody's magazine sent him the first of several Jack London stories. In 1910, he began a 48-year association with The Saturday Evening Post, which included illustrating seialized characters such as Peter B. Kyne's "Crappy Ricks," Norman Reilly Raine's "Tugoat Annie," Guy Gilpatrick's "Glencannon," as well as serials for Kenneth Robert...
