A contemporary realist painting by artist Benjamin Ferry that evokes a sense of nostalgia in the viewer. An old school pickup truck sits alone on the slight incline of this quaint city street lined with small shops with apartments above. A cloudless blue sky is seen overhead and in the reflection of the windows. There is a peaceful silence and calm to this painting, without the hustle and bustle of people walking down the street. The inclusion of a warm orange tone, a streak of golden light from the sun, breathes life into the otherwise eerie scene.
Artist Commentary:
This is another one of the Bangor series. I absolutely love that high latitude light. It's always fun to try to translate how light plays off of windows. People just don't make buildings with the same level of craftsmanship that they used to. The contrast of window air conditioning units against the old buildings really struck a cord with me.
About the Artist:
Ben Ferry is a former high school and college all-American soccer player who grew up in Washington, D.C.. After being drafted by "D.C. United", he played professionally for three years before a major spinal injury forced him to retire. In his work, Ben focuses on the human figure, landscapes, cityscapes, and animals in a variety of media and styles. His paintings are vibrant, playful and unconventional, often featuring bright, saturated color and imaginative subject matter. Ben received both his B.A. and M.F.A. in painting and drawing from George Washington University and still lives in D.C., where he teaches painting and drawing at Georgetown University and George Mason University.
