Benjamin Ferry
The Brits, Original Contemporary Figurative Still Life Oil Painting on Canvas

2014

About the Item

The Brits, Original Contemporary Figurative Still Life Painting, 2014 36" x 48" x 1.5" (HxWxD) Oil on Canvas Artist Benjamin Ferry utilizes highlight and shadow to capture the undulations in these carved busts of historical British figures. The paint is applied smoothly, but with enough of a weight to it to impress upon the viewer both the literal weight of the depicted objects, but also the weight they hold as leaders in history. A mint green paint job contrasts against the bronze statues and the wooden shelves they sit upon. As the viewer stares towards the painting, so do the figures stare back. Artist Commentary: I've currently been working within the theme of repetition, which allows me to take on many different genres of picture making. I find myself being drawn to man made vessels as the focus of these objects. This was a scene I came upon in the National Portrait Gallery in London. I was taken with just how very British each one of these men were, and how miserable and austere each one of them was in their gaze and attitude. I love British culture, and I enjoy how this picture is able to capture specific characters in society. I absolutely slugged the paint into this scene, to create that sense of weight and history, that a picture like this demands. About the Artist: Ben Ferry is a former high school and college all-American soccer player who grew up in Washington, D.C.. After being drafted by "D.C. United", he played professionally for three years before a major spinal injury forced him to retire. In his work, Ben focuses on the human figure, landscapes, cityscapes, and animals in a variety of media and styles. His paintings are vibrant, playful and unconventional, often featuring bright, saturated color and imaginative subject matter. Ben received both his B.A. and M.F.A. in painting and drawing from George Washington University and still lives in D.C., where he teaches painting and drawing at Georgetown University and George Mason University.

Joran van der Haar Red vases with Tulips 120 x 120 cm ( framed 130 x 130 cm, frame is included in price) oil on canvas The realistic painted "17th century style' bouquets by Joran van der Haar, are always an eye-catcher in our gallery. The colorful bouquets look natural but have a long history of months of meticulous and layered work. It is sometimes difficult to predict when Joran's work can withstand its own "test of criticism". In addition, the layered work with oil paint sometimes also ensures long drying times. Shortening this is undesirable. In 2014 the artist started experimenting and painting with oil paint, flowers and insects soon turned out to be his preference. Again, this was a source of inspiration. The artist about his work: ‘In the Rijksmuseum and Mauritshuis I found the still lifes of Jan Davidsz. de Heem, Jan van Huysum and Ambrosius Bosschaert...
