Reliquary, Abstract Still-Life Painting, 2016

About the Item

Artist Commentary: I came across these massive tangles of roots, trunks, and branches--between 12-16 feet high and nearly double that in width--lining a beach at fairly regular intervals. Their imposing presence and uncanny placement made them seem like sentinels guarding the beach, or totems for some nature rite. With their bone-like texture and color, the forms bring to mind skeletons of some fantastical creatures. I aim to convey their ominous and mysterious presence in individual portraits. Keywords: driftwood, beach art, nature, serene Artist Biography: Alexa rekindled a childhood passion for painting in her twenties and she now paints in fits and bursts while also working as an intuitive energy healer. Alexa has studied various techniques and theories at Massachusetts College of Art and the School of Visual Art in NY. She alternates between abstract and representational work and finds inspiration in subject matter that contains an inherent visual metaphor; an unexpected connection to other objects and ideas. Alexa has shown her work in NY, PA, MA, DC, and Puerto Rico, and she recently moved to Amherst, MA with her husband and two sons.

  • A Walk along the River
    By Marion Buricatu
    Located in Boston, MA
Artist Commentary: I’ve always wanted to paint a series on La Fleche, and it is happening… slowly. I love the very particular, soft lighting that seems so characteristic of the Loire Valley. Then, as I was looking through some pictures, this photo caught my painting teacher’s eye. She said, “I can’t wait to see what you’re going to do with this one!” This painting has three “fun” things about it. First, it is painted over a bright orange base coat like the two others in the series. Second, painting complementary colors over one another (the blue of the water over the orange base) normally results in something very similar to… mud. I had to be very careful! Third, this may not sound fun but I love painting grass and foliage - I use a technique where you hold the paintbrush at its tip, and just turn it around and around so the brushstrokes are almost touching. Do you have pictures saved where you always wonder, “what would that look like as a painting?” Or, “how would an artist or painter interpret my vacation picture?” You never know if they’ll start by painting the canvas orange! Words that describe this piece: France, river, flower, water, reflection, walk, Artist Biography: Life is basically a huge collection of moments. Sometimes you have no idea how everything will end up tying together - Marion Buricatu...
