Bernard Aubertin, a monochrome painter, was born in Fontenay-aux-Roses, France in 1934. His artistic journey began in 1957 when he met Yves Klein and created his first "rouge total." Aubertin's works offer a nihilistic perspective on art, emphasizing the contemplative rather than descriptive nature of the medium. He practices what he calls "pictorial silence" through monochrome painting. In 1961, Aubertin joined the "Zero" group in Dusseldorf, where he created his first monochromes. After visiting Yves Klein's studio, Aubertin realized which direction to take with his art and instinctively chose to work with red, which he recognized as a primordial and liberating force. He believed that red could embody the anxiety he felt to redefine stylistic and aesthetic canons. In his later works, particularly the Tableaux-clous series, Aubertin explores breaking the two-dimensionality of painting in order to give a new vibrancy to the monochrome. His energetic gestures and presence come to life in these works.
