About the Item

Rgrfinearts presents a rare WPA mural study by the African American artist Carl G. Hill. Mr. Hill was a student at the National Academy of Design and also at the Harkem Community School where he studied under Riva Helfond. During WW2 he enlisted in the Merchant Marines and unfortunately, he was lost at sea when his ship was sunk by a German U-boat. In 1939 Mr. HIll submitted a lithograph titled "Night Workers" for entry in the 1939 World's Fair, but it was not accepted. Each panel of this mural study is signed and dated Carl G. Hill, Jan. 1939. The upper panel measures 6 x 20 in. The lower panel measures 6 x 16 in and became the study for Hill's painting Haying.
