Charles Pachter
Hockey Knights

1986

About the Item

In the early 1980's Charles Pachter approached the chairman of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to do a Hockey-themed mural at the College Street subway station. It was a fitting idea as the station is just steps from the Toronto Maple Leaf's original home - the Maple Leaf Gardens. Although the artist encountered a lot of interference with his pending designs due to copyright of the team's logos and from other TTC bigwigs (who insisted that the players be depicted wearing helmets) the ambitious and impressive public art project finally debuted in April 1985. Over the last 30 years Pachter's "Hockey Knights in Canada" has become the TTC's most famous and beloved example of public art. It is composed of two groups of nine players. On one side is the Toronto Maple Leafs and on the opposite platform is the Montreal Canadians. One year after completing the TTC mural, Pachter again paid homage to hockey with this painting, "Hockey Knights". In this painting he depicts three players in vivid red uniforms huddling mid-game. An almost expressionistic quality presents itself in the flashes of turquoise, lime green, and purple in the player's white helmets; and beneath their stylized facial features, showcasing their physical exertion.

Charles Pachter (b. 1942) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting and patriotic images have independently earned their place in museums across the country. Pachter’s artworks, and unique version of Pop Art, have confirmed his position in the canon of 20th century Canadian art. Pachter’s most cherished images take archetypes of Canadiana -- the barn, Queen Elizabeth, and the moose, -- and depict them with a distinct style, a fresh palette (and often through a humorous lens). “Mini Blue Barn...
