Dans une atmosphère dramatique dominée par un ciel d’orage parcourud’éclairs, l’artiste anonyme met en scène le tumulte des éléments, avec uneremarquable maîtrise du clair-obscur et du mouvement. Sur le rivage battu par les flots, deux figureshumaines luttent contre la furie des vagues. L’une se penche pour portersecours, tandis que l’autre, les bras levés, semble implorer les cieux. Auloin, des navires affrontent les assauts de la mer déchaînée, tandis qu’unédifice côtier, à peine visible sous les nuées, évoque l’horizon fragile entrel’homme et la nature. La touche vive et nerveuse, la composition endiagonale, la précision des effets de lumière et la poésie mélancolique dusujet traduisent l’influence directe de Vernet, dont les marines furent priséespar les amateurs éclairés du siècle des Lumières.
