Dani Humberstone uses the symbolism of ripe fruit to illustrate the narrative. Painting directly from life allows her to translate three dimensions into two and capture the essence or life force of the subject. Individual fruits damage easily; so as they slowly age she tracks their gradual decay in the painting as she works. Fruit has been used metaphorically in art and language for centuries. It has helped Illustrate Fairy Tales, Mythology, The Bible and Shakespeare. An apple in Renaissance painting was symbolic of ‘a fallen woman’ and we still use fruit analogies to describe ourselves and our lives today. In her own work the artist also uses elements of abstraction, landscape or line drawing to hint at a deeper narrative within and opening the door to unseen possibilities beyond the immediate image. Dani Humberstone paints in oils, predominantly Old Holland Classic Oilcolour - using transparent glazes over opaque colour which creates intense levels of luminosity and depth. Strong light and shade, chiaroscuro, give atmosphere and tone.

Julia Adams comments: I use a variety of mixed media to produce my work – household glosses, spray paints, acrylics, inks and various printing techniques, rarely using a paintbrush! I like to apply paint with real freedom and spontaneity to produce paintings that have energy and depth, exploring my passion for surface quality, colour, texture and tactility.” “My series of ‘Interior Spaces’ paintings have been very popular and are constantly evolving. As a starting point I use a found image or one of my own photographs, adding or removing elements as I feel necessary to enhance the composition. I then start to play with my materials, constantly adding and subtracting. I will often include abstract stencilling to add a sense of drama, and introduce rivets to add further interest. I also enjoy including text, whether stencilled or found words in magazines. Size: H:30 cm x W:30 cm Bon Appetit...

View from the Train: Cityscape Oil Painting, View of Brooklyn
By Patty Neal
Located in Hudson, NY
View from the Train, 2019 24" X 40" x 1", oil on canvas This contemporary oil painting depicting a metropolitan view is the work of realist painter Patty Neal. The painting offers an intimate view of the city, as seen from a window, as it peeks from behind two metal structures. The dark browns and bright golds beautifully compliment the dusty blue, gray sky. Neal works highlight everyday city scenes, utilitarian infrastructure, and industrial or electrical apparatus. Artist statement: A life is an accumulation of experiences: visual, emotional and mental. By compartmentalizing these snippets of life we create boundaries. The focus of my work for many years has been the exploration of these various life aspects and how they are bound together or bound from each other. My process is often literally composed of boundaries. I make a painting by putting together multiple panels, or I segment a single panel into separate visual spaces. The works are made up of pieces or elements of city and landscape. While exploring the concepts of boundaries I play with visual “reality.” Sometimes I combine images that are upside down with those that are not and juxtapose images from different contexts. Literal boundaries, such as walls fences, expanses of water and highway median strips are also used. My intent is to invite viewers to look beyond these boundaries to see the possibilities of a connected whole.
