Title: "Blasphemy upon the wall" Artist: Derek Overfield The story of Capaneus is one of arrogance and violence. After scaling the walls of Thebes during the infamous battle described in Aeschylus' drama "Seven Against Thebes", Capaneus declared none, including Zeus, could stop him. Upon the wall he was then struck by a bolt from the enraged Zeus himself, forever becoming an example of the danger of blasphemy. This painting exists in a space of motion and contortion, inhabiting a moment that could be interpreted in numerous stages of the story. Above is a semi-abstract figurative work done from life. The work is completed using a subtractive/additive method utilizing latex paint. The piece is sold unstretched. It can be restretched either inexpensively at a frame shop or DIY and presented in a gallery wrap style. It ships in a sturdy tube, rolled.
