About the Item
Title: "Lotus-Eater" Artist: Derek Overfield Relaxed and almost swaying, this figure with its bleary expression is named for the "Lotus-Eaters" - an island people encountered by Odysseus in his journey home. After being blown off course, the hero and his men ventured onto the island only to find its inhabitants dazed and drunken with the beauty of the mysterious lotus. The crew that ate the flower forgot all their longings for home and cared only for reveling in the lotus' dream-like grasp. Above is a semi-abstract figurative work done from life. The work is completed using a subtractive/additive method utilizing latex paint. The piece is sold unstretched. It can be restretched either inexpensively at a frame shop or DIY and presented in a gallery wrap style. It ships in a sturdy tube, rolled. Through paint and line I seek to capture the light of existence, that "gleaming fire", as well as to portray its gravity. I strive to celebrate the figure, its mysterious power and charisma.
