About the Item

Title: "Nemo propheta in patria" Artist: Derek Overfield Mixed-media painting on natural canvas, inspired by the marble portraits of ancient Rome. The title of this large painting, "Nemo propheta in patria," is a Latin phrase that translates in English as: No man is a prophet in his own land. Above is a semi-abstract figurative work done from life. The work is completed using a subtractive/additive method utilizing latex paint and graphite. The piece is sold unstretched. It can be restretched either inexpensively at a frame shop or DIY and presented in a gallery wrap style. It ships in a sturdy tube, rolled. Statement "and around his head the fair goddess set thick a golden cloud, and forth from the man made blaze a gleaming fire there he stood and shouted and when they heard the brazen voice of the son of Aeacus the hearts of all were dismayed." - Homer, The Iliad My work is influenced by the classical and the romantic, the archaic and the modern - and strives for the monumental, divine and quietly brutal. Through paint and line I seek to capture the light of existence, that "gleaming fire", as well as to portray its gravity. I strive to celebrate the figure, its mysterious power and charisma. Like a purging fire, I hope to burn away the ornament, the unnecessary, in order to expose the purity beneath. :: Painting :: Classical :: This piece comes with an official certificate of authenticity signed by the artist :: Ready to Hang: No :: Signed: Yes :: Signature Location: Back lower right :: Canvas :: Portrait :: Original :: Framed: No

Located in Vilnius, Vilniaus apskr.
Based on fragments of authentic photographs and notes, Maja creates a reconstruction of a past she never experienced. It is a young artist's visual interpretation of someone else's memory. She reflects on the reliability of images and a melancholic nostalgia — “a longing to return to a place I have never been.” The artist raises questions about the possibilities of conveying memory and the relationship between image and truth, constructing a visual interpretation of a time period she never knew through her paintings. ⬜️ The work is exhibited at Contour Art...
