Edgar Payne
Lake in the High Sierra

c. 1925

About the Item

Measurements Painting 27.75 x 33.75 inches Framed 36.25 x 42.25 inches Edgar Alwin Payne, a renowned American Western landscape painter known for his depictions of the Sierra Nevada, the American Southwest, and European landscapes. His works often feature bold, impressionistic brushstrokes and a rich use of color to capture the grandeur Edgar Alwin Payne (1883–1947) was an American painter best known for his breathtaking landscapes of the American West, particularly the Sierra Nevada mountains, as well as scenes from the Southwest, including the Grand Canyon and Native American subjects. He was a leading figure in early 20th-century California Impressionism and was known for his bold brushstrokes, rich color palette, and ability to capture light and atmosphere. Born in Missouri, Payne was largely self-taught and traveled extensively in search of inspiring landscapes, painting in places like California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Europe. He was a founding member of the Laguna Beach Art Association and wrote a book titled Composition of Outdoor Painting, which became a foundational guide for landscape painters. His work is highly collectible and displayed in major museums and collections, particularly those focused on Western and American Impressionist art. This Sierra Nevada landscape, a subject he frequently depicted, features a high mountain lake with towering peaks in the background, rolling alpine meadows, and clusters of pine trees—all characteristic elements of his style. Payne often painted locations such as the High Sierra, Kings Canyon, and the Eastern Sierra region, particularly near Lake Tahoe and the Owens Valley. The brushwork is expressive, with thick impasto creating texture, and the color palette consists of earthy tones, rich greens, and blues that capture the vibrancy of the mountain environment. The hand made carved wood frame is covered in 23k gold, and enhances the painting’s classical appeal. This can easily be considered a very fine work, and is very similar to the example that is the frontispiece of the book “The Scenic Journey” which accompanied the recent multi-museum traveling exhibition of the artist’s life and work.

Moonlight Along the Coast
Located in Spokane, WA
Measures Painting 20 x 25 inches Framed 24 x 39 inches (approximately) This luminist and atmospheric evening seascape by Granville Redmond (1871 - 1935) was painted on Catalina Island off the California coast c.1920. Redmond was a very prominent California Impressionist known for his serene tranquil and mood-filled California coastal paintings bathed in moonlight with waves gently rolling onto the shore. As a deaf mute, he explained that without speech and hearing, his abilities to see things in a detailed and poetic way were much more honed and enhanced. He was renowned for his Impressionist landscapes, particularly those featuring California wildflowers, coastal scenes, and tonal moonlit settings. Despite his deafness from a young age, Redmond achieved significant acclaim for his art and even acted in silent films, becoming friends with Charlie Chaplin, who built an art studio for him on his large movie lot. Redmond lost his hearing due to scarlet fever as a child and later attended the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley, where his artistic talents were nurtured. He studied at the California School of Design in San Francisco before continuing his studies in Paris at the Académie Julian. He became a highly respected landscape painter, shifting between vibrant Impressionist poppy...

"New England Farm, " Landscape Oil Painting
By John C. Traynor
Located in Westport, CT
This large landscape oil painting by John Traynor captures a scene in New England. Cows are visible in front of a long picket fence, with a red barn and house behind the fence and lush green trees on either side and along the hills in the horizon. Fluffy, almost abstracted clouds sit above the hills, with a patch of blue skies shining through toward the top of the image. The painting is 48" x 72", and 58" x 82" framed. It is professionally framed in a classic, antiqued, gold leaf frame. It is signed by the artist in the bottom right-hand corner of the canvas, and is wired and ready to hang. John C. Traynor's painting style is reminiscent of some 19th century painters and the Dutch Masters. He uses his knowledge of light and color to create a certain mood in each of his works. The creation of atmosphere is an important element in Traynor's paintings. Painting outdoors, on location, is a prime source of inspiration and ideas for his landscapes. John travels extensively, painting the landscapes around him. John was born in 1961 and spent his early years in Chester and Mendham, New Jersey. His art studies began at Delbarton School in Morristown, New Jersey, and from there he furthered his education at Paier College of Art in New Haven, Connecticut. He studied figure painting at the Art Students League of New York, as a merit scholar, with Frank Mason. Traynor continued his studies in Vermont with Mr. Mason on landscape painting, drawing with Carroll N. Jones Jr. of Stowe, Vermont and sculpture with Brother Jerome Cox...

By John C. Traynor
Located in Westport, CT
This still life oil painting by John Traynor captures a scene of a large bouquet of purple and pink lilacs in a colorful, porcelain vase. It sits on an off-white fabric next to a lemon which is half peeled, the peel spiraling off the edge of the table on which it sits. The wall behind the bouquet of flowers is a warm, earthy sienna. The painting is signed by the artist along the lower right-hand edge of the canvas. It is 20" x 24", and 27" x 31" framed. The frame is an ornate metal-leaf frame with a linen liner. It is wired and ready to hang. Professionally framed in classic, antiqued, closed corner frame. Frame is metal leaf gold. John C. Changing Tides
By Maryann Lucas
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
An oil painting of the wetlands of Sag Harbor. Hues of greens, blues, whites and purples, make up this almost abstract landscape composition. Painted from life, at Noyac bay. Painting dimensions: 36 x 24 inches Framed dimensions: 40 x 28 inches Maryann Lucas lives and works in Sag Harbor. She is primarily self-taught but has also received instruction and support from wonderful and generous members of the East End artistic community. Working exclusively in oils, Lucas sets out almost daily to create plein aire landscapes and seascapes. In her studio, she works directly from life and captures the beauty of natural light as it transforms ordinary objects into visual delights. Lucas wants her work to celebrate all that is well with this world and brilliant in this life, despite its pockets of darkness. For me, she says, I know I am in the Presence of something beautiful, when it steals my breath, silences my mind, pushes out everything else and draws me in. I trust That. I use That to guide my hands as I arrange a still life or scan a landscape to determine where to set down my easel. Ultimately, That is what drives me to paint. Becoming evermore skilled as an oil painter is another of Lucas goals. To that end she remains teachable, finding it refreshing and vital for her own growth to paint with others. She has studied with favorite artists including Michael Klein...
