About the Item

Pair of views of Venice: The Island of San Giorgio Maggiore / The Piazzetta San Marco Eighteenth-century landscape painter oils on canvas 47 x 66 cm. - with frame 56 x 75 cm. This pleasant pair of paintings depict two famous Venetian glimpses, investigated here as lively documentaries of the customs and habits of the public life of the lagoon, admirably animated by the presence of small figures intent in their activities, are an excellent example of eighteenth-century Vedutism We see, in particular, in the first work the Piazzetta di San Marco, immortalized by the large main square, with the two granite columns that support the statues of the patron saints of Venice, San Teodoro, near the Mint and the Lion of San Marco near the Palazzo Ducale, which overlook the San Marco Basin. The square shows a snapshot of everyday life from the 18th century, with some market stalls, a musician playing his violin to passers-by and even a stage set up for a company of actors from the Commedia dell'Arte. In the second work another jewel of the lagoon is depicted: the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore (formerly called "the island of cypresses"), with the homonymous Renaissance basilica designed by Palladio in 1565 and adjacent to the important Benedictine monastery, overlooking on the San Marco basin and located in front of the Doge's Palace. To complete the composition we can see the Giudecca, the elongated island that houses the Church of the Zitelle. Very well executed, characterized by a marked brightness and a chromatic range with bright colors and highlighted by the contrast between lights and shadows, our canvases are a very interesting testimony of eighteenth-century Venice, portraying two of the most famous and fascinating views of the city . We can attribute the paternity to an author of the full eighteenth century, inspired by the pictorial style of the Italian landscape painters, and whose iconography was presumably drawn from the numerous prints with perspective views made through the optical cameras. In particular, these views of Venice draw their iconographic origin from a collection of perspective prints of the most influential European cities, made by the engraver Johann Balthasar Probst (1732-1801), characterized by a remarkable refinement in the line, at the service of a sense of perspective of undoubted value, and above all characterized by a strong Nordic taste. Descendant of a large family of Augsburg engravers, Probst contributed to making his workshop an important European publishing center between the 17th and 18th centuries, among the major German print publishers in the first half of the 18th century. Despite his travels, including in Italy, between Venice, Rome and Naples, not all the cities he portrayed were drawn from life but taken from earlier prints and drawings and filtered through northern European clichés. Many of these engravings have been lost and are now difficult to find on the antiques market. The work is in good conservation conditions.
