About the Item
BANANARAMA by Elizabeth Winnel is compositionally similar to work she has created in the past- a set of lips at the center of the painting, mouth open. This time, however, she has put a pop art spin on her usual photorealistic style. A light blue background is speckled with bright red sprinkles. Light pink lips open for a peeled banana.
"I often make tightly rendered, photorealistic lip and mouth paintings. I carefully plan them, source the resources required to set up my reference, and shoot the reference photographs, which I then edit in photoshop and then use that imagery as a basis for my painting. A few years ago, though, I was asked to do an illustration of a pop icon for a campaign, and at that time, I paired down what I normally might paint for the sake of clear, concise communication. I enjoyed playing with the flat paint, and found it pleasurable to draw from my mind rather than relying heavily on reference materials. I sometimes revisit that method to create paintings. I enjoy flat, intuitive painting a lot lately and feel that it has a lot of potential for continued material play. "
Elizabeth Winnel moved from Canada to Savannah, Georgia in 2006. She graduated from The Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in illustration. In 2008, Winnel moved to Brooklyn, NY and worked as a painter. She returned to Savannah in 2010 to pursue an MFA in painting, which she completed in 2013.
She is interested in the portrayal of the body as it pertains to body language and culture. Whether it is through color palettes, gestures, or symbols such as body hair or makeup, she questions where our biases in representational images lie and hopes to prompt the viewer to reconsider their relationship with a gendered lexicon of cultural motifs.
Winnel has exhibited work nationally and internationally including in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, Nashville, London, Berlin, and Toronto. She currently lives and works in Savannah, Georgia and Brooklyn, New York.

Zahra ZEINALI
The Doll’s House
“What can a true artistic temperament aspire to after a youth spent in Iran today?
To flee the hassles, prejudices, restrictions, to open wide a window of freedom rich in potentialities that were believed for a long time inaccessible. Zahra Zeinali became a visual arts teacher for fifteen years. Her pupils are 6 to 12 years old. Drawing, sculpture, painting, model design, she taught them a great diversity of techniques, but above all to think and design freely by themselves, in an atmosphere of joyful creative disorder which, surprisingly, is tolerated by a careful hierarchy. Then she studied four years at the University of Art and Architecture in Tehran.
When she arrived in France, after a brief abstract period inspired by the rhythms of nature, it was at the time of the Charlie Hebdo and Bataclan attacks, which marked her deeply, to the point of lastingly darkening the ideal of emancipation and autonomy that she had projected on her stay in Paris. "There is no paradise on earth" she concluded with a melancholy smile. An old doll, bought for 1 euro in a storage room, triggers a click in her. The bitter imprint left by the Iranian confinement, the memory of her fifteen years of teaching visual arts to children, the loneliness of her Parisian exile, all this sentimental nebula found a plastic metaphor in the image of the doll. This is what these delicate earthenware faces evoke, often abused, abandoned, the childish innocence of their ingenuous gazes, a sort of strange absence from the world of the living, as if their attenuated life took place behind the mystery of a theater curtain...
