About the Item

Original cover for Collier’s, published March 17, 1928. This Collier’s cover humorously captures the early challenges of married life, particularly those found in the kitchen. It features a distraught newlywed in the midst of a culinary disaster. A young woman perches on a stool, intently reading her “Bride’s Cookbook.” The source of her most recent distress lies at her feet, where a small dog eagerly investigates a fallen tray of burned dinner rolls, pawing at one of the charred pieces. A single, glistening tear rolls down her cheek as she traces a recipe in the book with her finger, seemingly trying to figure out what went wrong. Her vibrant red dress and crisp white apron initially draw the eye, but closer inspection reveals delightful details that enrich the narrative. The gleaming diamonds on her engagement and new wedding ring are prominently displayed on the hand she holds to her face in despair. On the same hand, a bandaged thumb subtly underscores her inexperience, hilariously painting her as a complete kitchen hazard. It’s a charming and witty portrayal of the bumps and laughs that so often come with early married life.

Washing Dishes
By Leslie Thrasher
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Medium: Oil on Canvas Signature: Signed Lower Left A woman and young boy are washing dishes together. Charles Leslie Thrasher was made famous by signing on for a long-term contract to paint every single weeks cover for Liberty Magazine. It was a back-breaking commitment to work at such a pace and an even greater challenge to come up with enough original cover ideas. The latter problem was partially solved by settling on a continuing story line, which followed a couple's courtship, marriage and children. It was a popular series, later made into a movie called "For the Love of Lil." His marriage provided the ingredients for it, and he served as his own model for the hero. As the presentation was humorous and light, the artwork tended to be lightweight, below the standards of his earlier cover work for The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, and his advertising illustrations Cream of Wheat, Fisk Tires...

Woman Returns to an Untidy Home. Books scattered on the floor, painting on the wall slanted. Signed lower left. Jack Welch was a tall Texan from Cleburne. He went through public school in Temple, Texas, took the W. L. Evans correspondence course in cartooning, and did a short turn at Southern Methodist University illustrating yearbooks. This was enough to launch him as a newspaper artist; he worked for papers in Texas, California, Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York. The next logical step was an advertising agency sketch man...
