About the Item

From Johannes Vermeer’s A Girl Asleep, 1656-57 Learning to lie is a bit like learning how to play a game. There are strategies. There’s an opponent. It can be fun because it’s a challenge. And of course, that competition is easiest when you’re playing against an inferior opponent. Lying is most effortless when the audience isn’t fully paying attention. The problem arises from the fact that engaging with a half-attentive audience tends to leave us dissatisfied.
