Adele Pinot
by Adele Pinot, Madonna in Adoration of the Child

1848

About the Item

Adele Pinot (1848), from Guido Reni (Bologna, 1575 -1642) Madonna in adoration of the sleeping Child Oil on canvas, 97 x 107 cm Signed at lower right "Adele Pinot 1848" The canvas under consideration depicts the Madonna and Child, caught in a moment of great tenderness and intimacy. Wrapped in brilliant luminosity, the baby Jesus is depicted in the foreground comfortably reclining on some soft drapes. The face appears serenely asleep and is framed by blond ringlets; the complexion is snow-white, and the legs, barely curled up and slightly bent at knee height, help to accentuate the naturalness and sweetness of the composition. Full of tenderness and maternal love appears the figure of Our Lady, with delicate features and a head covered by a veil, who, placed in three-quarter view, is totally attracted to the contemplation of her little son. The high quality found in the execution of the figures is also emphasized in the rendering of the soft draperies and the careful attention to detail. The interesting pictorial device of the circular frame surrounding the two figures allows the viewer to feel a sense of participation and emotional involvement, as if he or she were present at the event. The work, created in 1848 by French artist Adele Pinot, reworks the famous Madonna in Adoration of the Child by Guido Reni (Bologna, 1575 - 1642) now housed in the Doria Pamphilj Gallery in Rome. Reni's oval-format painting, probably repeated by the master, was the subject of both pictorial and engraving fortune. In fact, an early and faithful copy made by Giovanni Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato (Sassoferrato, 1609 - Rome, 1685), currently housed in the Parmeggiani Gallery at the Civic Museums of Reggio Emilia, is attested. Salvi must have particularly appreciated Reno's iconographic invention, as he later derived many paintings of the same subject and similar composition from it, as evidenced by his Madonna with Sleeping Child in the Galleria Estense in Modena. Equally dated to the 17th century are another pictorial reproduction of the work now housed at the Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Mansi in Lucca and some engravings made, with some variations, by the Dutch Cornelis Bloemaert and the French painter Jean Boulanger both located at the Gabinetto dei Disegni e Stampe at the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Bologna. Bloemaart's burin was printed by Giovanni Giacomo De' Rossi and has a dedication to the Spanish nobleman Pietro Paolo Avila, "Picturae et liberalium artium Studiosisimo," while Jean Boulanger's was edited by the Parisian Jean Leblond I. These engravings, the d'après and Sassoferrato's canvases undoubtedly contributed to the immense fortune of this image by Reni, which has been spread and appreciated over the centuries especially for its devotional potential and the intense emotionality it conveys. By Angelo Monticelli, Dancing Putti
Located in Milan, IT
Angelo Monticelli (Milan, 1778-1837), attr. Dancing putti Oil on canvas, 122.5 x 131 cm The canvas presented here, referable to the 19th century, constituted an exquisite example of a painting made to decorate a boiserie, as evidenced by the particularity of the format and the ornamental subject matter. The theme of dancing putti takes up a widely used and experimented model around the 1620s, on which the greatest artists tried their hand: pordenone, author of the Dance of Putti now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, for example, was able to make use of multiple visual models to fine-tune this complex and original composition, such as having known Marcantonio Raimondi's famous engraving with a gyre of cupids, derived from an invention of Raphael himself and dated between 1517 and 1520. Over the following centuries, the fame of this prissy subject was never diminished. In fact, the work under consideration can be attributed to the hand of 18th-century artist Angelo Monticelli, who specialized in tempera drawing and was a pupil of painter Andrea Appiani (1754-1817), active mainly in Lombardy, where, for the Teatro alla Scala he designed the figures of the box parapets (1807) and the curtain (1821). In 1826, during the repainting of Ferrara's Municipal Theater, Monticelli decorated the plafond with an Apotheosis of Lodovico Ariosto. The curtain of the Rossini Theater in Pesaro is also by his hand. For the Duke of Lodi Francesco Melzi...
