About the Item

Mid-17th century, Rubensian School Holy Family with St. John and Elizabeth Oil on copper, 36.3 x 29.5 cm Framed, 47 x 38 cm The painting is not signed The glassy texture, glacial in the hardness of the surfaces, identifies in the present painting the all-Flemish charm to which it owes its conception and elaboration. The artist ceaselessly repeats the modular exercise of structuring surfaces, pausing now to sculpt the muscles of the infant Jesus and John the Baptist, also children, now to fold with sharp edges the smooth robes of Mary, St. Elizabeth and Joseph. The oceanic-colored landscape in the distance is cut with luminescence compared to the bright green of the high ground on which the characters are resting. The bright yellow of Joseph and Elizabeth's robes encircles Mother and Son, directing the viewer's eye to the two main figures. Elizabeth, the mother of the Baptist, encourages her son with a light touch on his back as he freezes and admires in boundless amazement Jesus as he flies up his mother's leg toward him. The white veil that softens the Child's cradle is already an allegory of the white shroud of death and Resurrection; the wild herbs isolated by the artist in the right-hand corner of the painting, in addition to serving as an appropriate filler to the thin layer of grass that barely covers the earth, hint at the bitter herbs eaten by the Savior during the Last Supper, a traditional Jewish meal. Birth and Resurrection remain implicit narrative vehicles of the painting, exemplified by the perfect golden haloes as fine as an adult's hair and the rays on the Child's head, material evidence of the heavenly realm. The present artist approaches for the formalism of the two children the Holy Family by Jacob Jordaens now housed at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, moving for the sincere and embracing embrace in which the two cousins hold each other, on par with what the two present are about to do. The Flemish Rubensian lesson, declared by the master's Holy Family preserved instead at the Picture Gallery Sanssouci, Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg in Potsdam, Germany, testifies to how the present artist took up the Flemish heritage in full force in re-proposing, though updated to personal taste, that soft embrace of which Rubens first and Jordaens later made their hallmark.
