"Your shadow is all of the things, ‘positive’ and ‘negative,’ that you’ve denied about yourself and hidden beneath the surface of the mask you forgot that you’re wearing.” – Oli Anderson
My shadow is a reflection of who I am. It is like a mirror that shows the reality of who I am. No matter how I try to deny my personality, my shadow reminds me of what I am made of. It brings to light my dark side and also shows me my beautiful side. This shadow of mine is a friend that sticks closer than blood. It is trustworthy, open-minded, transparent and honest. It reveals, commends, corrects, assures and shows me that I am an epitome of uniqueness. Thus, I am my shadow and my shadow is me.
About Artist
Agbalaya Abdulahi Opeyemi, born in Lagos, Nigeria, is a versatile artist and graduate of Yaba College of Technology. His artistic journey began with training under Mr Owolabi Samson in 2013/2015, furthering his skills and knowledge under the mentorship of Akinola Taoheed Olaitan. Balancing art as a hobby and a potential career.
Opeyemi’s use of shapes, colours, and composition in his works conveys a connection message. The shapes represent life’s difficulties, while the colours define the dynamics of life. Employing black as a background colour symbolizes the dark shadows of life, while brighter colours like purple signify strength, ambition, creativity, and hope. The overall composition speaks of success, fulfilment, and the satisfaction derived from achieving one’s dreams.
Opeyemi’s creations carry a unique message “ FACE YOUR FEARS “ He aims to encourage individuals plagued by fears induced by challenges, struggles, doubt, failure, or mistakes. Through his art, he advocates for pushing through uncertainties towards one’s dreams, emphasizing that challenges are temporary obstacles in the pursuit of life’s aspirations.
Beyond its message to others, painting is deeply personal for Opeyemi, serving as a means to articulate the words he may not speak. His art portrays his reality, echoing Frida Kahlo’s sentiment that “ I don’t paint dreams or nightmares . I paint my reality “.
