About the Item
An expressionist portrait of a seated figure, acrylic on paper by French artist Alain Caucat. Signed bottom right. Also signed and dated to the back of the framing board. Presented under glass in a period fine wood and silver leaf frame.
Caucat has used an interesting technique of wide brush or knife strokes which gives a vivacity and movement to the painting along with a wonderful use of colour. The aim of the artist here is to portray their emotional reaction to the subject rather than the subject's physical reality. Therefore, shapes are elongated or shortened and colours are heightened/dulled focusing on conveying emotion rather than form.
Caucat started his painting career in his native Le Vigan, Occitanie, France and held his first exhibition in 1972. Our painting is one of his earlier works.
He went on to achieve considerable international success both as an artist and author.
