Expressionist oil on canvas portrait of a clown by Italian artist Luciano Morterra. Signed bottom right and dated 1976 to the bottom left and presented in a period frame under glass. There is also a trade label for a gallery in Milan to the back framing paper.
A striking and highly colourful rendition of a clown in top hat and bow tie. The artist has used bold primary colour fields with broad brush strokes giving great energy and presence to the painting.
Very often clowns are interesting subjects for artists as they are intrigued to reveal the inner feelings and expression of the clown which can often be in juxtaposition with a smiling, eccentric and outgoing external appearance. A commentary on the multiple faces that we all present. This image offers a clown looking wistfully into the distance whilst the make up is smiling. As with most clown images there are two sides to the coin. This painting is both joyous and reflective.
