About the Item

Nude in the style of Albert Joseph Moore 19th Century canvas fragment laid on modern canvas Framed, ca. 86 x 46 cm Stretcher, ca. 84 x 44 cm Mysterious nude masterly painted in oils on canvas in the mid 19th century. I acquired the painting just after it was discovered, tightly folded up and tucked away forgotten for decades, in between the headpiece and the top of a cupboard in Ardingly Antiques Fair, England 1995. Since then the creased canvas has been with me and once in a while, when I would show the artefact to a restorer, they would first admire the alluring nude, but when it came to discussing restoration, respectively presentation of the painting, discussions fizzled out for three obvious reasons: Cost, technical limitations, over-restoration (considering the severeness and amount of damages, too little of the image would remain original). However, a thing of beauty it is – So here goes my thinking: Cost – Unfortunately in a commercial situation, it is the value of the object which sets the scope of possible restoration that can be undertaken. The artist is to date unknown. However, there is a fine, sensitive quality present and for decades I have always – together with others – come back to see a closeness to the work of Albert Joseph Moore (1841-1893). The canvas can easily be dated to the mid 19thC. So, a loose attribution to a Victorian master and the obvious attractivity warrants a certain budget to preserve and present this painting. The next two considerations follow suit: Technical limitations/over-restoration – To flatten, infill and in-paint all missing surfaces, including the missing feet as well as hair, is an immense and expensive undertaking - which is not to say that it couldn’t be done. However, if realized, the custodian will have to accept a high percentage of restoration and reduced equity. Here is what I came up with: Interestingly, although there are considerable missing sections gridding across the image along what were the creases of the once folded canvas, nothing important has been lost – we can clearly perceive the model and there isn't really a need to restore, as long the paint surface is flat and stabilized. All considered, I decided to clean lightly, flatten and line the antique canvas with modern canvas using a neutral, heat sensitive adhesive (reversible). That way the paint layer benefited from being strengthened from the back by penetrating adhesive as well as through the newly affixed lining. The painting was not varnished, thus retaining its antique dry appearance. The now larger formatted painting, was traditionally attached to a modern stretcher and open framed with plain molding. The bare strip of new canvas along the edges and the frame were then painted in a dark-blueish grey. I am very happy with the result and the Moore’ish nude has been delighting my visitors for months. However, the materials have now dried and it is time to let her go and meet the market.
