About the Item
Alexander Sharpe Ross is an artist of consummate skill and wit. This painting captures a young girl in a doctor's office without permission. A peak moment of drama is depicted as the surprised girl is discovered while she applies the doctor's bandages on her raggy ann doll. The story is clearly told without words. This is traditional narrative art but characterized by an inventive and stylized paint technique in the background and on the doctor suit. This level of artistic skill and talent is a hallmark of the great American Illustrators who had years of rigorous training in the classical tradition. They did not trace photographs which are popular to cheat portraiture today. Work is framed. Possibly for Saturday Evening Post inside illustration
